I recently got an Edge 1050 and was looking forward to using it for the first time on a ride, which I did yesterday. When starting the ride, I tapped on the "Road" profile and was shown the data screen. Rode a total of about 36 km on a leisurely ride. From time to time, I would stop and noticed when I started cycling again a big blue flashing button would appear - half pause and half go symbol, presumably to manually unpause recording. Given the foregoing, I had assumed that it was recording the entire ride. I finished the ride and got home and shut off the Edge. Later that evening I opened Garmin Connect on the phone and noticed that there was no activity in history. I thought maybe it's because I needed to manually sync Connect to the Edge. So I turned on the Edge and, surprisingly, it also showed no history at all - it was as if I hadn't ridden at all.
Needless to say, I'm a bit puzzled by this. It clearly seemed to be recording during the ride because it prompted me to unpause during the ride. I didn't set any specific route but from time to time selected different destinations to navigate to. During one break the Edge went to sleep, but when I turned it back on it prompted me to unpause so I assume was still recording. Lastly, when I did turn the unit off, I selected "Sleep" and not a full shutdown.
I suppose my dumb question is why the Edge didn't retain any record of the ride at all. Should I have done something differently? Was there something I didn't do that I needed to in order to record the ride? Is there a way to set it so that it automatically starts recording when I ride? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Another thing I noticed was the rather slow map refresh. I wanted to use the Edge primarily to navigate to specific destinations, which I tried to locate in the map by zooming and scrolling. But that proved to be rather slow and painful - for example, when scrolling one screen over, it would take maybe 5-10 seconds for the screen to redraw. Same with zooming in and out, though perhaps a little faster depending on how much I zoomed in and out. Is this normal? I must admit that, if it is, this is extremely disappointing for what is supposed to be their flagship cycling computer. But maybe I'm doing something wrong or didn't configure something properly? Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.
