Navigation automatic zoom function

So its almost a year and this feature is still broken on the 1050 and never worked. Please fix it. -> Menu - activity profiles - navigation - map - Auto zoom

a video is also in this old topic https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1050/378534/navigation---automatic-zoom

  • Same here with 13.14 release. Played with it last week but there is no difference turning it on or off. Looks like a nice feature when it works looking at the video in the other post.

  • I've been complaining about this issue since a few years (already present on the 1040). Still does not work on the 1050. However, it DOES work when I have another screen (not the map screen I mean) is active, for instance the data screen with heart rate / power or speed. In that case when I approach a turn, the map screen pops up instructing me to turn left or right. In that case the map IS Auto-zoomed.

  • Some of the (at least my) confusion on "auto-zoom" is that people are describing two different features, I have not used  either much on my 1040 and previous devices as I find them both not very reliable or predictable. I don't know if Garmin expects both to work at the same time or if they are mutually exclusive.

First is "Auto-Zoom" (Menu>Activity Profiles> [Select A Profile]>Navigation>Map>Auto Zoom>(Enabled or Disabled), the Garmin Support Help says "Automatically selects a zoom level for the map. When Off is selected, you must zoom in or out manually".

Users have said that previously (variously either in previous devices or in previous software versions) that with this set the maps page would either zoom in when approaching a turn or slowing down and would zoom out after leaving a turn or speeding up, I have never observed this working in 15 years of Garmining!

Second is the turn "Navigation Prompts" (Menu>Activity Profiles> [Select A Profile]>Navigation>Navigation Prompts>"(Text Only" or "Map" ) when (and only when) "Turn Guidance" is enabled (Navigation>Courses>Three Vertical Dots (top right of Courses/Saved Courses screen)>Turn guidance>(Enabled or Disabled). With the Prompt "Map" & "Turn Guidance" both enabled a zoomed in (about 50m) Map like screen will display when close to a turn and will return to previous display (either standard map screen or data screen) when the turn is complete. See VeloGPS 1040 Navigation Demo  video on youtube *

I presume the 1050 does the same?

It is possible the auto zoom was a previous attempt to provide similar to the later turn guidance version and the setting has never been removed but now does nothing???

(*I would upload some screenshots and links to show these but forum software is not offering that option at this time, again!)

  • Like I have written the feature is with this setting Menu - activity profiles - navigation - map - Auto zoom. Nothing else. Also as mentioned in the old topic the user Piotr made a video on the Edge 1030 where it is working, against the 1050 where it does nothing. Video: Youtube

Also mentioned by him in the old post, if you navigate to a Point on the device the feature is working. Its just broken with imported tracks. I tested Komoot, Ridewithgps and Outdooractive. Always the Same problem.

It has nothing to do with the feature where you are on a different data page than the map and the map pops up showing when to turn. They are 2 different Features. It was also working fine on the 1040 thats why I miss this feature.

  • Auto zoom. Nothing else.

So you are saying that the Auto Zoom worked with "Turn Guidance" Disabled? but the navigate to a point only works if Turn Guidance is enabled as there is no loaded course? As I said, I have never seen this working and I have 10s of thousands of kms following courses but almost 99% without turn guidance, just follow route on map with maybe course points. If using Turn Guidance I can't see the point of auto zoom doing the same?

ps, I have examined the videos and they all are done with turn guidance enabled ie thus with the big turn arrows and thus could get the zoomed turn screen if the options I describe above were set and as per Michel Hayen’s post

  • I always have Turn guidance enabled. This feature is not about showing the turn arrow on the map. The feature is about you have the map zoomed to about e.g. 200m you come closer to the corner, the device reigsters this and zooms the map in to 50m to See it better when to turn. Then when you are around the corner it zooms out again to 120m is the default I think. What Happens on the 1050 is nothing. Clearly as Seen in the Video. It just sticks to the zoom all the time, only when you leave to route and have recalculation enabled it zooms to 800m and does nothing after that. This feature only works when Navigation to a Point directly on the device. If you lose a course the line is dark purple -> feature is broken. If you navigate to a Point -> the line is light purple and working.

  • The whole navigation module is more or less unusable since Version 13.XX

I changed from an old Elemnt Bolt to the 1050 to get a better navigation... and it's a pity.

The arrow like zoom does not disapear until you skip it manually, auto recalculation does not work or it takes ages like a 30 year old Computer and the whole device is slaggy as **** (especially after the last Update). Audio tones from the Radar unit are sometimes muted.

Newest Problem: The device shows a message of an open Bluetooth connection to a Sensor and you cant skip or aknowledge this message. The screen freezes after some time.

The 1050 is now stored in the last corner and I'm using my old Wahoo Bolt again. I'm so tired and annoyed of this 650€ brick of s***.

  • You're abolutely right, these are two different things. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for explaining both features in detail, that's helpful. It works exactly the same as you described for the 1040. One correction though. You say: "With the Prompt "Map" & "Turn Guidance" both enabled a zoomed in (about 50m) Map like screen will display when close to a turn and will return to previous display (either standard map screen or data screen) when the turn is complete.". That is correct, but not when having the map screen already active. Then no zoom is presented when approaching a turn, at least not on my Edge 1050 (and it also did not work this way on the 1040 as far as I remember. I work with Komoot tracks by the way.

  • Did you try making a course in Basecamp and then import it? As this is a Garmin product, I can imagine this could work. Never tested this myself.

The autozoom worked fine on my 1030 and 1040, until it suddenly stopped on the 1040 (probably after some update). On my 1050 it also does not work.

  • thanks for clearing up te difference between following an imported course and navigating to a navigation point entered on the device. I can confirm that it works as it should with this second option. Very frustrating it's not working anymore with the first option. I'm 100% sure it worked before (with earlier firmware versions on the 1040).
