+1, this caused soo many navigation errors for me... It's an annoying bug not a feature and should be opt-in or gone completely.
The #1 CUSTOMER requested feature for last 5 years... and still can't disable it.

While a course is active, you may swipe down from the top of the Edge to access the 'Widget' menu.
Swipe left/right to find the 'Controls' widget and the 'Virtual Partner' option, then use the toggle to enable/disable Virtual Partner.
