Smudged Screen Kept Me From Navigating

I've had my Edge 1050 for nearly a year, but today was my first time to use navigation.  I have used navigation on many older Edge models, 750, 800, 1000, 1030, 1030 Plus, and 1040.

I applied sunscreen before riding, but I washed my hands with soap after applying it.  I've noticed on other rides that when I touch the screen, my finger leaves smudges, rendering parts of the screen hard to read.

When I got near the place where I had plotted a course, I stopped and prepared to navigate. Naturally, I had to touch the screen.  I got the course selected, and the Edge told me to proceed to Ryan Street. This was already funny, because my course started on Citrus, and turned onto Ryan. As I started the sun was at my back, and I could see the screen to some degree.  But when I turned north, the sun was shining on the Edge's screen, and the places I had touched were smudged and unreadable.  I keep my backlight at 30%, which I'm sure didn't help with readability.  I tried increasing the backlight, but since I couldn't clearly see what I was doing, I'm not sure I succeeded. Things were so bad that I decided to abandon my course and just ride.

Does anyone else have trouble reading the screen?  Am I going to have to carry a cloth to clean my screen after every touch?  Is there a technique to keep from smudging the screen? Should I increase the backlight whenever I plan to use navigation?  Should I use my Edge 1040 for navigation rides instead of the 1050?

I used Garmin Share to copy the course from the 1050 to the 1040.  That worked just fine, compared to the older Edge models, where file sharing was hit or miss (mostly miss).

  • I keep my backlight at 30%, which I'm sure didn't help with readability.

With 30% backlight, I'm not surprised that you can't read the screen in the sunshine - with or without finger smudges.
1050 does not have a transflective LCD like 1040 but a “normal” LCD without optical reflective layer.
You have to turn up the backlight properly! (70 to 90%)
The Edge then consumes about 6% juice per hour - so what?

  • Thanks, your advice was "on the money".  I had a much better experience today.  I set the display brightness to 70%, and started the course while I was still at home.  I could easily read the display in all conditions.  The only problem was that I couldn't get up the climbs I had put on my route!

That 30% brightness is OK for riding my regular routes.  I just look at the display occasionally to see things like my speed, the distance I've covered, or the time I've been riding.  Remember how older Edge models like the 705 or 1000 would get dark in direct sunlight?  The 1050 does some of that at 30%....

  • Why don’t you set your display to auto brightness? That works very well in my experience.
