Firmware 13.13: 6 crashes during a 35km ride...

When I got the offer to update my Edge 1050 to firmware 13.13 I made the mistake to update Disappointed

During a 35km ride this evening I had 8 freezes: after about 5 km, 10 km,  20 km, 30km, 34 km, 34.2 km, when saving at 34.5 km and a minute later when I wanted to switch it off.

The device is with this firmware completly unuseable. The freeze happend on all screens and in all modes. Never had that before.

  • I am having same issues as others, first it crashed, then loops, and now (after spending hours trying to find a solution) I cant get any computer to recognise my garmin. I contacted Garmin Australia and they are stalling so I suspect there may be a fix coming as my unit is only 4 months old.

  • I replaced my self-generated OSM Maps with the official one (so deleting my maps, installing Garmins Map). On the 45 km ride yesterday I had not a single problem. But this is no solution as Garmins Maps are not as current as I need and not useable for my Gravel tours.

  • Try the solution I mentioned in my earlier post, it worked for me, 1050 is back to being stable now.

  • Hi, where I live it doesn't get very cold, but I've noticed that when I turn on battery saver mode, the device sometimes restarts. It's happened at the beginning of an activity and also later on, around 2/3 into the ride.
Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
@Garmin any idea what could be causing this — or even better, any solution?

  • If I look at the custom maps which don't work and which work: it looks like maps without DEM (Hill shading) data don't work anymore, FW 13.13 is expcting this data and crashes if they are not there.

Anybody else using a Map with DEM data? The ones I found except the one mentioned here, which claims they have it, don't have it...

  • When you said 'wipe' do you mean reformatting the drive?  I was able to reformat my 1030+ as a drive and that really cleaned up a lot of my issues.  I'm hesitant on upgrading it to the 1050 because I had heard it's difficult to access the 1050 as a USB drive.  If you could post the details on how to reformat the drive that would be wonderful.  Thanks.

  • Thats really interesting, hadn't noticed that myself but will see if I can test it out too.

  • started a chat with Garmin support. Chatbot with very limited smartness

  • Here are my results of poking around with IMGInfo tool (www.javawa.nl/advanced.html) and some real world testing:

    1. garmin.opentopomap.org that is working for some people - I was only able to look at monaco map because of download speeds but it has DEM entries attached to map cells and looks exactly same as other maps which heve DEM data

    2. bbike.org extracts don't have DEM entries in general, freeze my 1050 when it tries to reroute

    3. freizeitkarte-osm.de maps for December 2024 and latest have .DEM entries in map cells but still freeze

    4. openfietsmap.nl has DEM data, not tested yet

I wonder if anyone has idea how to deeper compare the .img files and maybe allow us to check for crashes before we go out riding. There has to be some difference between garmin.opentopomap.org and other maps with DEM data included.
