Firmware 13.13: 6 crashes during a 35km ride...

When I got the offer to update my Edge 1050 to firmware 13.13 I made the mistake to update Disappointed

During a 35km ride this evening I had 8 freezes: after about 5 km, 10 km,  20 km, 30km, 34 km, 34.2 km, when saving at 34.5 km and a minute later when I wanted to switch it off.

The device is with this firmware completly unuseable. The freeze happend on all screens and in all modes. Never had that before.

  • Removing my OSM map did indeed prevent any further crashes (thank you) - but it also prevented me from finding roads suitable for cycling (everything looks the same on the Garmin maps) and it also prevented my Edge from reasonable routing (it seemed to avoid major roads at all costs, regardless of bike paths). So the device became more or less an ordinary speedometer, but a large and heavy one.

@Garmin: Is there any way to downgrade?

  • Updated to 13.13 yesterday. Ride today.

In a 26 km mtb route the Garmin stopped twice after 10 km and had to restart it by holding the powerbutton for about 30 seconds.

Did that two times and missed 5 km from the route.

In another topic there were also 2 people with the same issues.

  • Same issue for me with custom maps installed and the latest update. Was working perfectly prior to an update 3 days ago.

The only way to fix as others have mentioned was to remove the custom map. Which is not something I can sustain going forward. I have an event early June and I need those custom maps to work.

@Garmin I hope they are keeping an eye on this thread and can give people the option to downgrade or I am going to be scrwed in June.

  • I have emailed Garmin support, I suggest eveyone else does the same to make sure they are fully aware of the extent of this issue.

  • Same issue - super annoying. Switched "activity profile" from gravel to road using a different custom map, still continued to freeze, less frequently (about 15 times during a 3hr ride). Suggest less focus on connect+ and more on usability of devices.

  • Same problem with 13.13 at riding a course.
Unit kept on freezing completely; resetting / rebooting didn't help at all.

  • I think I managed to fix this with some help from someone else.

I wiped my Edge 1050 and downloaded my usual maps from https://garmin.bbbike.org/, the moment I started a ride and tried to browse the map, the 1050 locked up.

Wiped it again and downloaded the maps from garmin.opentopomap.org/ (which I am sure is the same maps) yet this time everything was fine, and has been in the testing I have done over the last couple of hours.

Also interesting that the maps downloaded from garmin.opentopomap.org/ do not show in the "Other" category on my Edge 1050 like the maps from https://garmin.bbbike.org/ do.

  • I just came back from a 43 km Tour. First freeze was at km 7. At km 21 I made a restart. It froze immediately again. At home I made a restart. With that firmware it's completely out of order.

No chance to use the edge 1050 with this firmware!

  • Wiped it again and downloaded the maps from garmin.opentopomap.org/ (which I am sure is the same maps) yet this time everything was fine, and has been in the testing I have done over the last couple of hours.

I don't think they are the same. They are both created with mkgmap, but a look at the contents with Javawa IMGinfo shows many differences. But if opentopomap.org maps work, we might be able to produce other maps in a similar manner...

  • Updated yesterday to 13.13 - I would have been better off reading this forum yesterday.

I did a soft reset 8 times on today's 60km bike ride and am now missing almost 20km.

I have now uninstalled the custom maps and hope that it works.

tomorrow I will contact garmin switzerland
