1050 Battery Percentage takes minutes to update after turning on from Sleep or Power down

The Battery % for the unit seems to lag badly, especially after turning on.

For instance, after a ride on Sunday, I put my 1050 in sleep mode at 88%.  When I turned it on for a ride on Thursday, it said 88% when I turned it on, and then still said that when I picked it up in a few minutes.

Before I started my ride, the battery percentage updated to 78%. So I had lost 10% in less than a week in Sleep mode, which is probably a separate issue (seems like noticably more leakage than when I kept my 840 in sleep mode.)

This is an issue because when I turn on my device and read the battery, I am not sure I can trust what i see or know whether the abttery is critical enough that I need to charge it.  Also, makes me wonder if the % is laggin during the ride as well.

  • I cannot understand so many why people leave their Edge computers in Sleep Mode, rather than turning them all the way off, especially if you are going nearly a week between uses!  It isn't any harder to turn the unit off, just pressing a different choice on the screen.  When I turn mine back on, it does take bit longer to get ready to roll, but I can be letting that happen while I roll the bike out of the garage.

I have seen the lag in posting the battery level, but generally I see it when I'm charging the unit.

  • I don't use Sleep Mode to save 5 seconds powering up. The reason I got into using was because that was the best way to reliably connect to the Varia Radar and to connect the light network with the Varia and my front light. This was true with my 830 and then the 840. The 840 was even worse, with sleep mode barely helping. It might be generous to say the light network worked 30% of the time on my 840, and even then might cut off mid-ride.

One of my favorite things about upgrading to the 1050 besides the great screen visibility is the fact that has been connecting flawlessly to my Varia (and my light when I have needed it.)

I powered down the 1050 after my last ride, so we will see if it does just as well connecting all my sensors and radar from fully off as it has from Sleep Mode.  If it does, I'll save my battery life.

  • I keep forgetting that other Garmin users have different requirements compared to mine!  I have an older generation headlight and two tail lights (so I could signal turns and have a double brake light), but it has been a long time since I needed to use them - probably back in Edge 1030 days.  I was riding at 5AM because I was on a medicine that made me sunlight sensitive.  I don't recall that I had any particular problem once I set up my "light network".

I also have the RCT715, but I've only used it a couple of times.  I didn't have a single bike that would allow mounting the unit with the hardware provided (seat posts too large or saddle bag would have obscured the light on the bike with a round seat post). I had to spend another $50 for the seat rail mount kit to mount the unit on one bike.  But I haven't ridden that bike for a  long time.

I hope the 1050 works well with your lights!
