12.18 firmware
when i stop moving, the map is rotated slightly off, it points to the side about 20 degrees, at the same time edge 530 rotates map correctly. i tried to calibrate it without success.
is this expected behavior?

Same problem with mine, but it rotates way more, makes navigation on the trails really hard sometimes. It may also toggle the map back and forth
This is bad, really bad as it makes the device unreliable…
Garmin please just allow to turn off this auto align "feature" it's clear that it's designed to show the compass in correct orientation no matter how you hold it, but normally, you're not holding it, it…
What‘s the difference between hand hold and mounted anywhere?
(non magnetic surrounding in both cases of course…)
The compass only kicks in when standing (speed = 0). During riding the compass…
I have the same problem with my stem-mounted Edge. But when I take the device off and raise it by 30 cm, the compass points correctly.
It seems that there is a magnetic interference.
i am holding it in hands. no cellphones/action cameras/heavy metal objects nearby
I had the same Problem and it seems to be about the angle you're holding it at. Almost parallel to the ground = weird stuff happens. Angle it up and everything is fine, as if it would try to correct for screen rotation. It's the same on my wife's and mine. It never happens to her though because it's mounted to the stem and hers is at an positive angle, while mine is -6, which is ok, when straight but not when I turn the handlebars in.
i noticed this as well

This is bad, really bad as it makes the device unreliable for navigation. Have opened a support case on it and it takes for ever.
Had the same problem on my 1040 Solar and that was eventually fixed. But, when I checked it out recently, that also had the same problem.
Not very impressed with Garmin support on this matter which probably affects a lot of devices across 1040 and 1050. Not at all impressed as this seems to be exactly the same issue I had a long time ago on my 1040. Is it lack of regression testing??
So currently having their two top products, neither works.
agree. it is basically useless for the purpose i have bought it. also, i tried to reach garmin support about this, but they basically told me they didint care since they dont provide customer services in my region.
Garmin please just allow to turn off this auto align "feature" it's clear that it's designed to show the compass in correct orientation no matter how you hold it, but normally, you're not holding it, it's fixed onto the bike and depending on setup/terrain it will just always be a problem. Seems like someone just copied the whole compass code from a handheld gps, without thinking.

The compass only kicks in when standing (speed = 0). During riding the compass is not involved - it‘s measured by GPS.
I assume then the 1050 has the Calibrate Compass option like on the 1040?
Menu>System>Calibrate Compass
On my 1040 I have to do this at least once per week, works ok for a few days but then goes off again.
