Best way to create a course

I bought an Edge 1050 a few days ago. The software version was updated to 12.16. Cycling map of Singapore/Malaysia/Vietnam/Philippines was installed. I have tried to create courses in 5 different ways: (1) use Strava Web app, (2) use Strava phone app,  (3) use Garmin connect web app, (4) use Garmin connect phone app, and (5) use Edge 1050. Only maps created by (1) & (2) could sync with Edge 1050. Maps created by (5) could not sync with Garmin connect phone and web apps.

On top of that, the maps created by Garmin connect and Edge 1050 often have problems, such as running on the wrong side of the roads with opposite traffic flow, unnecessary turns and crossing roads.

Do you experience similar problems with Edge 1050 and Garmin Connect? What are your solutions?

  • Make sure you have the latest version of the cycle maps installed. The Map Manager on the device should indicate whether there's an update available. Or you can use a computer and Garmin Express.

As for planning courses, many 3rd party planning services integrate with Connect, so if you create a course on Strava for example it will be synced from Strava to Connect and then to your Edge 1050. So not sure why 3 and 4 are not working for you. Did you select the send to device option in Connect app and web?

Not sure if Courses created on the device will sync with Connect though, never tried it myself.

Personally I use Komoot for planning my routes, but I guess preferred platforms differ based on what country you are in.

  • I've used the RideWithGPS website to lay out courses going back ~15 years.  Back when I started using it, it was the best for creating courses and have continued to use it since.  You can link it to Garmin Connect and when you pin a course in RWGPS it will automatically download to your Edge.  This has almost all been in the US, so don't know how well it will work in your area.
