How to install the tether on the Edge 1050?

When I try to push the tether through the hole, the wire goes through but the fabric cover will not go through. It seems to me that the space between the silver part with the holes and the dark grey rear is too small

I had trouble with this as well. As I recall, I had to push the small loop though with a straightened paper clip or similar, and maybe fish the loop out when I had it pushed through. I'm looking at it now, and I decided I'm not interested in trying it again. That said, I'm a believer in using the tether, since I ran into a car backing out of a driveway, and the Edge I had at the time broke the mount to get loose, and the tether kept it connected to the bike.

I phoned Garmin Support and after a lengthy discussion I was asked to send a video of my difficulty threading the tether. The 1050 was declared faulty and I was sent a prepaid label to return it on Friday

Brand new 1050 arrived Wednesday and I inserted the tether with no problem. The issue appeared to be that the speaker was sitting proud of its position.

Boy, sometimes I do things backwards! I have always put my tether in the opposite way that you have yours.
