Strange "Crash" last ride (Display freeze)

Hello,

encountered a strange sort-of-crash last ride:

- after around 30km the display was frozen. Buttons did not do anything, looked like a complete crash

- after another 10km im managed to turn it off (i thought) using long presses on power and lap button (it was hard cause I was wearing long gloves and was riding in a group, so did not want to pause)

- then no restart was possible with hitting power button, the display stayed black

- at home i did fiddle around with power + lap button long press and suddenly the unit turned on again

- strange result: it showed the complete ride including all sensor data and I could save it. So the unit never really crashed.

Anyone else experienced this?

  • Very similar experience two days ago with my 1050. A few miles from end of 24 mile ride near home (Denver) my unit became totally unresponsive on a screen. Tried various button combos and using my Garmin remote to switch pages. Tried phone app which seemed to be connected to garmin but didn’t unfreeze. At end of ride used pause button, nothing. Got home and did a long press on power button to cause reboot. My ride was there, complete both ways and all captured.

Today, at about same place though different ride, unit rebooted itself and picked right up on my main data screen, had full ride when I reached home.

So weird because I just spent three weeks biking in Italy with lots of route loading, navigation, etc and unit was flawless.

  • I had this situation three times in a couple of months period. One time I had to shut down the unit by pressing on the power button for long time. After unit shuts down, I restarted by pressing power button again, unit turns on and all data was saved. I just press start button to start the ride from that point. Last time it happened today again. But this time unit shutdown and restarted on it's own. I just need to press start button to continue record the ride.I hope Garmin support read this massages and take action to correct this issue.

  • Were you just riding or following a loaded course? I have not had any issues when just riding or following a "FIT" file course.  But recently I loaded a "GPX" file from "MapMyRun" to help escort a marathon. I had a similar issue with lockups and reboots. Especially when I changed the courses when pre-riding the routes.

  • Mine was just riding, not following a course.

  • First instance, I can't turn it on. I was able to turn it on after over a minute long holding the power button. Two other instances, I was following course on navigation wich I download it from RideWighGPS.

  • Yes , I had the same issue while doing a normal ride without following a course. It froze after 25 min in the ride. Had to long press the on/off button for about 40 sec. However it didn’t loose my data. I find it very annoying

  • Thanks all! Good to know I am not alone on this one.

In my case I was nit following a course.

Installed the latest Beta after the ride described above, curious if it will happen again (hopefully not), but already had another bug there....looks like there is always something...

  • Very much the same experience...  20km into the ride on a climb the screen just froze...  I tried all the buttons...  multiple buttons... couldn't turn the computer off...  Got to the top of the climb (15 minutes later) and did all the same stuff, no response. Gave up on it and started riding again...  then, boom everything was there, ride was in progress...   Not sure what that was, but it edged off some of my confidence in Garmin...

  • This is about Garmin watch crashes but wonder if slight chance could be connected to the crashes we are discussing here as some of the same underlying software: www.androidauthority.com/.../
