See attached screenshot. I'm on the loaded course, which goes straight ahead and continues straight ahead, but the 1050 is telling me to make a U-turn in110m.

The same experience od 1050/1040. You have to look at the map :-) Instructions are sometimes faulty.
Yes, I ignored the instruction. I've also noticed a few instances where the 1050 tries to send me the wrong way at roundabouts - clockwise rather than anticlockwise. Most roundabouts are handled correctly, and when I go back and look at the GPX files that I uploaded to the 1050, those roundabouts that are wrongly handled by the 1050 are handled correctly in the GPX.
I've noticed the same intermittent roundabout problem in reverse when riding in countries where one drives/rides on the left, so roundabouts should be traversed clockwise, but occasionally the instruction is to go anticlockwise.
Turn of directions and look at the map. What more do you need?
What do I need? A device from Garmin that works as it's supposed to. And your suggestion would mean having to keep the display permanently at the map screen in order to follow the purple line.
