Course monitoring

Hello,

I use the 1050 only for mountain biking and when I go to the statistics on the Garmin Connect application and the "road surface" section it tells me that I did 100% of my trip on the PAVED surface and nothing on the NO-PAVED, how does it detect the surface on which we ride?

Is there a particular setting to make so that it detects what type of surface I ride on?

Thanks you

  • I don't know how it works on a 1050 but OSM based maps have a "surface" attribute, when I look at the map on my 1040 it will show unpaved surface with a dashed road indication but only if I have unpaved roads turned on in the Map "Tray" or the Map Overlays. It might not recognise & count the surface as unpaved if the unpaved setting is not enabled ? MTB trails might be something else, I don't know as I am not good enough for them?

  • Hello,

yes this setting is enabled, I don't understand why it doesn't work

  • I use this “utagawa” map, maybe I need to activate “garmin cycle Map EU” so that the 2 maps overlap??

  • yes this setting is enabled

Do you see the unpaved roads/trails(?) as unpaved (dashed?) on the map, if not than it probably does not count them as shch in the stats, perhaps it requires the actual Garmin map. Again I don't know about the 1050 but on previous devices having two maps with overlapping coverage caused problems. Try it with just the Garmin EU map.

  • Surface data comes from the map so unless the map you are using contains that information in a way the Edge expects it will not show up.

As suggested above I would disabling any non Garmin maps and try riding in that area again and see what you get.
