How to import gpx files from a Mac to Edge 1050

Just having a 1050 delivered, I had hoped to import some gpx files into the Edge from my Mac Studio running under Sonoma 14.5.

However the 1050 does not appear as an external volume. The Edge is also not recognized by Disk Utilty.

Rebooting the computer or using another Garmin branded USB-C cable did not help.

So I tried to upload several gpx files through my Garmin Connect account, using Safari, but also this doesn't work.

Each time an error message appears.

Does anyone have a suggestion of another workaround?

Did you actually try that or did you read that somewhere? Afaik that only works for devices that support mass storage mode but happy to be proven otherwise

It looks I succeeded once. But when I retry the steps above, the 1050 doesn't appear in the Finder, nor in Disk Utility.

Will keep looking, and will post if I find something.

Anyway, I got this new Edge for cycling, and not in order to become an IT specialist :)

Please stop making excuses for Garmin. It was Garmin that chose to present the 1050 via a proprietary Microsoft protocol instead of as a standard USB mass storage device. Therefore, it is Garmin's responsibility, and no one else's, to provide the tooling necessary to make the device work.

The idea that garmin is going to do something is laughable. Solve the problem so you can mount it yourself, it took me ten minutes, or don't. Tilting at windmills is of no use.

There’s nothing “proprietary Microsoft protocol” about MTP. It is a standard from the organization maintaining USB, just like USB mass storage mode is. Not only recent Garmin devices use it, Android devices have been using it for a long time.

So Garmin doesn’t need to “provide the tooling necessary to make the device work”. The device works, but apparently not the way you want it to…

True, it is not as it is documented, because the manually is simply incorrect. It was probably copied literally from the Edge 1040 manual.

This is not uncommon with Garmin, and the same mistake appears in documentation of at least one other device (for example GPSMAP 67, which only supports MTP). For other products the manual contains the correct information on MTP limitations with macOS, see for example the Fenix 7 manual:

The 1050 uses MTP protocol to connect to PCs (MTP is what phones typically use). The other Edges don’t use this protocol

Using MTP is used by other Garmin devices and takes some work to use. It’s not a “glitch”w

Whatever the reason is, the manual is wrong.

Doesn't work with the 1050. I tried Windows 11 on VMWare and that doesn't work either. The MTP driver doesn't load and I can't install it for some reason.
