Two system reboots on today's ride

Had my 1050 spontaneously reboot twice on my ride today.  First time when it was trying to recompute the route when it I went off course (bang, Garmin boot screen).  Recovered ride and could just press the start button to resume.  Second time was exactly the same as a 1040 (beta firmware) reboot I had on my previous ride, where I had manually rebooted the device mid-ride to reconnect some sensors. When I finished the ride, it briefly showed the summary page and then rebooted.  Ride saved with only the data up to the first reboot, except for the summary totals (distance, ascent, time, etc.).

The only ConnectIQ app I was running in common between the two devices was MyBikeRadar, which does write stuff to the .fit file on ride completion.  Issue there?  I've also taken a copy of the 1050's filesystem after the ride just in case there's some diagnostic stuff that could be interesting.

Running v9.11.  Do like the 1050 though!

  • Hi everyone. I bought my 1050 few months ago. The initial firmware was 7.something. On my first ride I had no problems. The thing was working great. Same day I updated to the latest version at that time. 9.something. Next day when I went for a ride, the rebooting problem started. It was like this every single time that I used it. A newer firmware came out but the problem continued. I went back in the shop and asked for a replacement. The guy was quite familiar with garmin, told me they already sold over 10 from this model and I was the first to complain. Offered me to try to fix it and if the problem persists to replace it. I agreed. I am not sure what he did exactly. He connected it to his PC and wiped it out. Something like an iphone restore. (Not just reset, but a complete restore in itunes.) He explained he wiped out the firmware and afterward uploaded a fresh copy of it, which he downloaded form garmin. It was same version.Since then the thing has never rebooted again. And I have over 1000km rides. And I have updated to newer firmware versions at least 3 times afterwards.
So my thoughts are that back in the beginning there were problems in any of the firmwares and after updating to a newer one something went wrong in some of the devices, their caches, logs or whatever. And updating to a newer version will not resolve the issue, as it is local on the exact device. And the only option is to do this complete wipe out which clears the bug  of course all settings info and etc are lost. No backups have to be used said the guy in the shop.
I hope this will help you find a solution. At least from garmin should be able to say how can a reset like this be performed.

  • 1.- Yes

    2.- Yes

3.- Most recent, today 24-10-24 and on 13-10-24 (race with nav)

    4.-  https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/313005460

My device froze completely and started rebooting which is why I had to use my watch to record the first stage of the race and then while resting, completely reset the 1050 to record the second stage without using navigation.

Since then, screens sometimes freeze while on an activity or, like today, when I finished it, it froze on the Discard/Save screen. I just kept pressing the Save button for like 3 minutes until it saved it and then, because it was a workout, it also froze on the workout perception screen.

Hope this info helps to solve the bugs. Firmware seem buggy for such and expensive unit and experienced brand.

Also, I have to rearrange my workout screen everyday. For some reason it does not save the layout.

    Best regards,

    Julio.

  • Updated to v11 beta and my latest ride was the first in a long time free of hangs and reboots. Only 60km so it still may be a happy accident but release notes mention a lot of stability improvements.

  • I had my first reboot this weekend. It was admittedly a bit longer ride than I’ve been doing lately, though not very far - roughly 45 miles. The reboot happened about two-thirds of the way in. I am running the latest software version.

  • Getting pretty frequent reboots now, almost every ride.

  • Every day the Edge rebbots on the newest Beta. It's so frustating.
