new garmin 1050 won't turn on?

Just got the device in the mail, opened it up and plugged it in to start charging only to find out that it isn't doing anything.... at all? I don't get a charging light, the screen doesn't say it's charging even if it's off? It doesn't boot itself nor is it bootable after simply leaving it plugged in for 15+ minutes.

Hopefully I'm just doing something very stupid and you guys can educate me. I've tried the cable that comes with it, a cable I've tested to charge my phone, multiple power bricks. Hopefully someone can tell me why I'm dumb pretty quickly and save me from thinking I just received a brick in the mail.

Thanks in advance.

  • My new unit worked for 2 short 10 mile rides, took firmware update, and then would not turn on until I did the 30sec power press followed by another press of power.

Is there any reason to consider this product anything other than defective?  Has Garmin responded with any sense of support?

  • FYI to those worried about using a "powerful" charger. I have a device that measures the power in the USB-C, and the 1050 is only using 7.5W while it charges. This is using an Anker 65W charger. As with all smart devices, the device controls the charging, not the charger. So, it should make no difference which charger you use. I have gone from 0 to 45% charge in about 20-30 minutes. I too have found that if I  leave it off the charger, it drains the battery, That surprised me since I got it 11/2024, and did not try it until 2/28/2024, and it still had 90% charge ! Today April 5 2025 it was dead. Someone mentioned that you have to turn it off correctly from the screen, rather than use only the power button, or it will drain when off.

  • I think the 1040 Solar is a better unit.

  • on my new unit I has this once. Not since the latest firmware update though. Otherwise, it’s been fine.

  • The screen is the one reason I have to disagree with this. I can read it so much more easily. The 1040Solar is a really great device though.

  • Thanks! Crazy that it takes that long to restart.

  • 19 days ago it  was working fine after  reset . After a ride  I   left  it  on charge. Today it seems to be dead, tried reset wiht  only power button, then tried what the other buttons too,  nothing. I  left it on a different charger while  resting it, and it finally turned on. It was only 1%, despite  being left on charge for 19 days! I  expect  it to work for  now.  What  I am seeing is if  you  don't use  it often ( maybe  every few days  at least ?? ), it stops charging. You  have to disconnect it from  the  charger, then reconnect and reset maybe to get it  start charing again. Why has this not  been fixed ??

  • I had the same thing, got it, set it up, paired all the stuff in the bundle, hooked it on power. 2 hours later and changed and wanted to take it out. I was already out the door and all I got was a black screen. So.. back inside, shoes off... trying to get to work. Somehwere down the line after 15 minutes of fiddling and looking online it went on.

I must say I have the same with attaching to express, I plug the USB in, express software wont see it. I turn it off, on, off, on and then suddenly I get a black screen and some text and I know that now it will see it. Can not find any logic in it yet so far, perhaps I am too stupid.

One thing I know, if the 1050 shows it color screen, express won't see it. It seems like if I awake it connected from sleep state it goes in the black connect mode or something. Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Sometimes, old Garmin 1050's won't turn on, either! I finished my ride on Thursday, saved the ride, sent it up to Garmin Connect, and powered off the 1050.  Friday, I got ready to ride, and the power button wasn't doing anything.  Like Garmin Edge units of the past, this power button is somewhat "touchy", so I tried a few more times.  I couldn't get it to turn on.  I went out for my ride, promoting my 1040 to the handlebars.  When I got home, I tried connecting the 1050 to power - still nothing.  Then I got on the forum, read this thread, and  not only connected to power, but also held the power button down for the prescribed 30 seconds.  Sure enough, it came back to life, showing the 38% battery charge it had 24 hours ago.

I assume it will be OK again, as it was for 180 rides since last June 29.  And I'll try to remember this "tip" for restoring the 1050!

  • I find if I plug in the USB C cable with the device asleep and just wait about a minute, it will open in data connection mode
