new garmin 1050 won't turn on?

Just got the device in the mail, opened it up and plugged it in to start charging only to find out that it isn't doing anything.... at all? I don't get a charging light, the screen doesn't say it's charging even if it's off? It doesn't boot itself nor is it bootable after simply leaving it plugged in for 15+ minutes.

Hopefully I'm just doing something very stupid and you guys can educate me. I've tried the cable that comes with it, a cable I've tested to charge my phone, multiple power bricks. Hopefully someone can tell me why I'm dumb pretty quickly and save me from thinking I just received a brick in the mail.

Thanks in advance.

  • I put mine on another charger, then unplugged and hold the start button long (Not sure it was 30 seconds though). It then booted.

  • Another 1050 unit won't turn on :-( . I have it for about a month without any issues. Today it won't turn on however. I follow the advise to plug it to computer USB port and hold power button for 30sec. After holding power button for around 1min unit was still dead. But after I pressed power button for second time it turned on normally. Hope it'll help for others.

  • I think my device has developed a similar problem, somehow coinciding with the installation of the new beta I guess. Well, sometimes after leaving the device in a sleep state, it does not wake up when I press the power button. I have to hold the button down for a 15 - 30 s and the boot process starts.

  • This just happened to me this morning before my ride. I charged my 1050 last night and in the morning it wont turn on. Used my garmin watch the whole ride instead. I searched it and saw your post/answer and tried it and it worked!

  • Mine has the latest firmware.

I found it briked this morning.

    30S start... nope. Charging... nope.

Your meathod worked, too bad it's factory reset.

I guess their update didn't fix a thing

  • Just got the 1050 for Christmas. Everything was great yesterday,. It has 60+% battery and I got it all set up. Today I plugged it in and saw a firmware update. Clicked on it

just walked back to the unit a while later,  the screen is off and buttons are unresponsive.

I held the power button down for at least 15 seconds and it finally woke up. Also was pushing button right simultaneously for a few seconds when it woke up. Not sure if it helped or not.

  • Let it charge for three hours and then try turning it on. Also, call Garmin as their online team is friendly and helpful.  When turning off the1050 be sure that you see the circle in the center of the display fade away. If the screen just goes black it is sleeping and not off and in a few hours the battery will be completely drained. You need at least 60% battery before the device will turn on again.

  • My unit has the same problem as the OP. Completely dead on arrival. I've had maybe 6 Garmin Edge units over the years and this is the first one to ever show up like this. Very unimpressed.

  • I used mine for a year with no trouble.  Then one day I took it off the charger and nothing.  I just tried the 30 second hold on the power button, and it worked on the second try.

  • Funnily enough the replacement unit I bought (original one never worked at all) just did the same thing after 2 months. Full reset, lost all my settings and history. Brilliant. But at least it did start up. Battery was at 53% having been in the drawer a week so no excuses. Just bad software.
