new garmin 1050 won't turn on?

Just got the device in the mail, opened it up and plugged it in to start charging only to find out that it isn't doing anything.... at all? I don't get a charging light, the screen doesn't say it's charging even if it's off? It doesn't boot itself nor is it bootable after simply leaving it plugged in for 15+ minutes.

Hopefully I'm just doing something very stupid and you guys can educate me. I've tried the cable that comes with it, a cable I've tested to charge my phone, multiple power bricks. Hopefully someone can tell me why I'm dumb pretty quickly and save me from thinking I just received a brick in the mail.

Thanks in advance.

  • Another dead unit here…pretty disappointed. Tried multiple chargers, tried the 30 sec power button…nada.

  • Another dead unit.  This is very disappointing!

  • Mine doesn't turn on either at the moment.

I had one successful ride, update to the new firmware, added payment card, ...

I wanted to go for another ride today and it didn't turn on. I thought it might need charging, even though it supposed to be half full.

When connected to various chargers it doesn't show anything either.

I'll charge it for a while and then try the long power press.

  • So working units go dead too?!  I hope someone can eventually let us know what the defect is.  The fact that a power cable doesn't turn it on means it's not the button.

  • Did you try holding the power button for 30 or so seconds? My 1040 does that every once in a while, completely unresponsive…but if I hold the power button down for at least 30 seconds it will boot up, not sure why…but it has been discussed here with the 1050 also.

  • I finally got mine working again, so it's not a dead until.

I did a few charging and 30 seconds button holds cycles and at some point it turned on.

  • If the unit can't be turned on occasionally I still think the unit is considered defective.  What if you can't turn on the unit just before a big ride that needed navigation?

  • My unit is sent to Garmin for replacement. Have to wait weeks. :(

  • All,

I had the same problem, after unboxing I was able to drive 2 rides, after which the device no longer started.

The above options tried out, pressing the power button for 30 seconds, different power cables without successful results.

Indignantly but friendly to the support service called (BE) and here I got the following steps with yes a positive result.

    1. The device must be off.
    2. Press and hold the round and start button.
    3. Turn the device on at the same time.
    4. As soon as Garmin appears on the screen, release the round and start buttons.
    5. This is also a reset method and can take up to 5 minutes until everything is loaded.

This method worked for me, however, I had to reset everything, but at least it works.

A software update will be released soon to prevent this issue.

  • I think this is what happened to me.  I think I left it on, depleting the batter - in any event, the next time I got on the trainer, it was a brick. I attempted to recharge it using my iPad 20W charger, but it stayed a brick.  TI was about to give up, but then I recalled something about power level from a cursory reading of the 1050 manual and charged it with a 9W transformer and a couple of hours later, it was at 61% and working fine.  Definitely worth a try.
