Edge 1040 - FW 29.22 crashes regularly (Route navigation)

When I follow a route navigation, my Edge regularly crashes after 20, 30, or 40 km. Afterwards, it restarts automatically, and I have to manually press the start button. This means I lose 300 to 500 meters of the recorded distance. Am I the only one experiencing this?

  • hey  ,

to be honest, I am using now years old FW for the 1040 and there is a very simple reason for that: when a new FW has been released, I check the forum and the results are always the same, in every single case: I see crashes, crashes everywhere.

despite my FW is buggy, and has the famously catastrophicly sized cursor of the impossible to switch off and totally useless crap, you'd call "virtual partner", and it loses GPS signal more often than not, and so on, so I'd be very happy to update, but after several critical crashes in my memories of this unit,

I won't update, until you are able to release a somewhat stable FW in future.

what do you think, garmin is capable of that? or am I asking way too much?

  • Hi  ,  the bugs often aren't baked in in the firmware itself but result from a bodged upgrade process. It's not seldom that the same firmware suddenly works flawlessly after a device reset and then reinstalling it. If you are not happy with your current version it would be worth a try or you wait at least until the next update (the testers of the current beta didn't find much problems in the last weeks).  And remember that in a forum the unlucky ones with the problems are prevalent and the majority with no problems don't have a reason to write anything.

  • When will the next firmware be published? I am still suffering from freezes and reboots.

  • Have You tried a full device reset?

  • Yes, although my new device had the first crash during the initial setup process Wink

With respect to the firmware I don't think there are any possible solutions left for me. I have tried everything which is suggested here. I believe now it is hardware issue and will get a replacement.

  • Hello, I have same/similar behavior. When I ride longer courses, then eg. after 3-4 hours of activity the device restarts. I use 3rd party maps, but these same maps I used on other Garmin 1040 with older FW with no crash even during 5-6 day nonstop bikepacking activity.
Last time the device restarts I noticed that it writes message like "saving diagnostic" or similar, because it crash in the moment when I stop navigation according one course and chose different course for navigation. If this message appears on previos restarts I don't know as I only notices that display shuts down during ride.

  • I just recorded a 1000 km event (+ multiple pre-race rides) in two segments (600 km + 400 km) and for the very first time I did not face any spontaneous reboots.

    What did I change?

    - disabled weather widget as I noticed it is dragging down the device

    - disabled weather glance

I am on the latest firmware (V29.22) without any IQ apps and with default maps.

  •

I'm surprised that the weather data could influence the crash behavior. Was the route navigation running throughout the entire trip, and was the recording accurate?

  • What surprises me is Garmin doesn't seem to have option to upload crash logs built into the Garmin Edge software, the debug logs capture exactly what caused the crash/reboot. This should be an option to get quality data into the hands of the developers/their coding agents to close the loop and rapidly turn around fixes.

  • It recorded throughout the whole segments (600 and 400 km). Loaded course files for navigation were each roughly 200 km with turn guidance enabled. Recording with Multi Band GPS was accurate.

I am not 100 % sure if the weather widget is the root cause. I need more training data to be convinced.
