Edge 1040 - FW 29.22 crashes regularly (Route navigation)

When I follow a route navigation, my Edge regularly crashes after 20, 30, or 40 km. Afterwards, it restarts automatically, and I have to manually press the start button. This means I lose 300 to 500 meters of the recorded distance. Am I the only one experiencing this?

  • This is expected behaviour. The 1040 is not suitable for routes exceeding 40 km.

  • Same, have had it just crashout on multiple rides, usually when using powerguide for an event, but have for example had it crash today when doing just normal navigation.

It's honestly a HOT MESS. Crashes in rides under any circumstance is a major fault with a device designed to record and navigate your ride.

I don't agree with Peter's comments about it being "expected behaviour" because it's certainly NOT advertised to work only on short rides, and there are NO WARNINGS that a ride longer than 40km is in any way a problem. But experience says it certainly is a problem.

Today not only did it crash during the ride today, but the rest of the ride somehow ended up not being saved - now is there a chance I discarded instead of clicking save? maaaybe... - but very unlike me to accidently click discard and then confirmation after a long ride. Really disappointing experience. Something has to improve with the development team and testing.

  • Coming from Wahoo, I am still shocked by the user interface and the overall sense of bugginess. The interface has so many small glitches that an Apple designer would lose their mind. Still, I plan to keep using the 1040 for the next two years, since it was expensive, before switching back to Wahoo or try something new like Coros.

This device should never ever crash, but I collected about 50 crashes within 5 month, several times during competitions. I have no trust in this device anymore. I also approached the customer service, but they do not bother as this seems to be accepted behaviour.

  • Hi @all

When I contacted support, the representative asked if I had installed any third-party maps. Yes, I had. The response: "Then we've found the culprit." However, this map wasn't activated for the activity profile I was using. Nevertheless, I deleted the "external IMG" and did two rides using the Topo map... both resulting in the familiar crash.

This gave me the idea to reinstall the external map and navigate with it. That was today, and I had a positive experience during route navigation (~40 km).

The Edge didn't crash. I'll continue to monitor this.

By the way: This reminds me of the CycleMaps that were installed when I bought the device (2023), which initially produced the same error until they were updated in mid-2023, at which point the problem disappeared.

  • I have never installed any IQ app. This cannot be the cause. Re-installing the map with Garmin Express did not help either. For commuting with passive recording it is fine, but it becomes unstable for longer routes as soon as navigation is enabled.

  • Hi  , I may not have been clear. I'm not talking about any IQ apps, but rather a (free) third-party map. I don't experience any crashes with this map. The crashes are clearly caused by the original Garmin Topo-Map Europe Central.

By the way: I'm using the third-party map from www.speichenkarte.de/Index.html

  • This could really be the root cause. Sometimes the topo maps (2025/10) do not render POIs properly. For example, the POI is shown as a black cube for a couple of seconds before the proper icon appears. I have not tried any third‑party maps yet.
