Edge 1040 no turn by turn not working once android phone's screen goes black. BUG??

I have been having so many issues with garm

I’ve been running into a lot of frustrating issues with Garmin alerts lately. My Enduro 3 won’t give me 1-minute heart rates, and now my trusty 1040 has stopped providing turn-by-turn voice prompts.

Here’s what I’ve noticed: if I have Garmin Connect open on my Android phone with the screen on, I hear the turn-by-turn alerts through the phone just fine while using the 1040. But if I start the exact same activity with Connect running in the background and android screen off, the voice alerts completely disappear.

I’ve already checked all the obvious things — battery optimization, sleep mode, permissions — nothing seems to be blocking Connect from running in the background. What’s strange is that my Varia radar works perfectly even with the screen off, but Connect just won’t deliver turn-by-turn voice navigation once the display goes dark.

It feels like this must be an Android issue, but I’ve triple-checked..     If connect is open on phone and I start an activity on the edge 1040 the voice talks as it should.  But if I stop that exercise and start another with connect open but phone screen off I hear no voice...  I just can't figure it out..

Any guidance or help would be appreciated... Garmin is working every last nerve I have the last couple of weeks, this shouldn't be so damn hard.. Why can't they come out with voice alerts on the 1040  device itself? I would buy it in an instant...

  • Reinstall the app Shrug

    What phone is it exactly?

  • The 1050 has voice on the device itself. The 1040 only has a beeper.

It's not the fault of the 1040 if the Garmin Connect app doesn't work in the background.

  • Android Samsung A53.   There is no doubt it's the connect app because it has to be open and my phone screen has to be on for the voice nav to work.  If my phone screen goes dark I get zero voice prompts..   It's infuriating that one of the main features of edge 1040 can be messed up for more than 24 hours without a fix.   I get that if you have an iPhone you might not be having an issue so I guess it's not a big priority for Garmin to fix the bug quickly.     it's really not a good look for Garmin to leave these core issues broken for so long.    My wife just got a vivoactive 6 and all the voice alerts were broken out of the box..  This was embarrassing to me, considering I spent months talking her into moving to Garmin from Fitbit...  I love Garmin but I'm quickly realizing that they break so many features when they come out with new updates.  It's almost unbelievable how they don't notice...

  • Hard restart your 1040 (hold power button until it restarts, ignore the screens in between)

    And restart your phone.

Your problem occurs roughly  since 24 hours and everything worked before?

What has changed between functioning and not functioning?

Forgot to disable general power saving mode or similar?

  • I never said my device worked 24 hours ago,  what I said was a bug as important as voice nav it SHOULD be fixed in 24 hours because it's a core feature.... It hasn't worked for at least 10 days....   I did a hard restart and even deleted connect and reinstalled..  I've done everything.. Many others with the 1040 are having the same issue it's a bug..  If my android phone's screen times out,   the turn by turn navatagion STOPS.    It's an ugly bug that has been reported by many others..
