Version 28.33 Still crashing and rebooting

Downloaded version 28.33 firmware. Went on a 100km ride today, and the device crashed and rebooted yet again. I was hoping this firmware would fix these crashes. It appears not in my case.

It was 30+ km in to the ride, and I had stopped. Paused the ride, and restarted. Soon after crashed and burned. It does not look like I lost any data, but this is extremely frustrating.

Anybody else had this on 28.33 ?

  • 28.34. I think it froze when I touched the screen, on a night ride. The screen was frozen about 6 minutes into the ride. After I had a safe place to pull over and deal with it, the screen and all hardware buttons were unresponsive. I held the power-button for 30+ seconds, and nothing happened. Then I held it again for about 10 seconds and got it to reboot.

After the reboot, it came back to the screen as if I'd paused the ride. Aside from missing data that wasn't recorded while the whole thing was frozen, I just re-started the ride and didn't lose any other data.

This is the first time it froze like that, but since 28.33 it's been crashing/rebooting on more than 10% of rides.

  • An update. Not been out for a while and a Beta update became available 29.16. I loaded it and rode today. I had one problem where the unit was stuck for about a minute or so, and then it freed itself and updated the position on the road. I will be riding more before I consider this a fix.

  • Today on 28.34 my ride didn't upload automatically, I tried to force sync but still couldn't. I had to reboot and manually sync to my phone for the ride to upload.

  • I have updated my 1040 to the latest beta. 29.17. I have done a 25km ride on Sat - no issues, and 106km on Sunday - no issues. Climbpro still lags, but there were no reboots or locked screens on both days. Not sure if this is a fix for just me, but may be worth a try if others are having issues.

  • Also on 28.34 - Reboot/shutdown mid UCI Championships in Lorne/Australia!!! So unreliable junk!!! I'm really disappointed, wish I still had my old Edge 800. At least it didn't randomly reboot.

Another weird bug: I am also have seeing it randomly reporting about half my actual speed. I have the Garmin speed sensor on wheel, and open skies above (no building around to obscure gps) and the ~37kmph speed randomly dropping to around 20kmph. No cadence changes, open road.
Each one of the speed drops is mis-reported. Cadence same, no stops on road in that section.

  • Totally agree!

    it’s just unacceptable!

there is one main feature that these devices are made for, and they are crap at this!

I don’t care having all tha fancy feature that are meant for the 2% of the users when the basics are not working, and now it’s more than 2 months… (for me)

    money wasted!

really need to get an alternative

  • During my last ultra-cycling race, I experienced more than 30 mid-ride reboots, about 2-3 crashes per day. Each time, I had to stop at the roadside, wait 2-3 min for reboot + recovery, and reload the route. At first, I was extremely frustrated, but after a couple of crashes, I completely lost any emotional connection to the 1040 and simply accepted this Garmin fate. ;-)
