Prevent Firmware Update

Hello all,

do you know is there any working solution to block firmware updates? My device is always downloading new firmware when connected via WLAN or via cable and Garmin Connect.

I found an older discussions where it was suggested to create an empty GUPDATE.GCD file and put it into the Garmin folder on the device - but this is not working for me, my empty file is always overwritten and the device pops up with the message to update the firmware and this is really annoying.

Thx

Gerhard

  • create an empty GUPDATE

Yes Garmin “fixed” that method, the only current technique is to press the back arrow ( top left of the update option screen that says install now or later) and this will stop the update offer for a undermined time, days or weeks, when it is offered again press the back arrow again for more time…until the update is safe to install, might be a long time?

  • To prevent firmware updates on my device, I do the following:

    I disable Wi-Fi.

I no longer use Garmin Express.

    I download maps from download3.bbbike.org/.../
with the Maptheme Mountain, the maps look almost like Garmin Cycle Maps.

Automatic device updates can also be disabled in the Garmin Express settings.

On my Android phone, I have used a firewall to block the connection from Garmin Connect to download.garmin.com.

My Garmin Edge 1040 still has software version 24.19, and I am very happy with it.

However, I would only be able to get the latest map updates from Garmin and some apps from the Garmin Connect IQ Store by updating the firmware.

  • Thx - yes I know this option „back arrow“ and it is working most of the time. I dont know why but sometimes the update is postponed for weeks and sometimes it is popping up after two days…

The option to disable Wifi and not using GC is not worth for me but also thx for the hint.
