Edge 1040 multiple crashes since 28.20

First ride since the firmwide update - navigating a course, about 60 miles.

Device crashed 3 or 4 times within the first hour - says it is 'saving diagnostics' or something, then reboots. After reboot it resumes the course navigation.

It wasn't doing this before this latest update.

I gave up the course after an hour or so due to this problem.

  • Nothing useful at the moment I think as it's been wiped since the crashes, but when I take it out next if it crashes again I'll post it

  • I have timed mine - every 28 minutes it does the saving diagnostics reboot thing even if I am not moving.  Seems like some debug code left in or a buffer overflow or something.   Today I tried deleting my temporary files have to wait until Wed to fine out if it worked.  I tried a soft reset, unpairing my phone neither had any impact.  Very frustrating!

  • I too have the same issue - it happens every 28 mins (approx) - I have tried a few things with no effect.  Today I deleted temporary files (under Device Reset) it was a featured added in this release.  This is very frustrating and screws up data collection - my old 840 worked more reliably!

    Garmin Please FIX!!

  • Same problem.
It restarted twice during a 60 km ride and once at the end when I was saving the activity.

  • Same issue here.  Is it possible to go back to an earlier revision of software?

  • Same issue with my 1040.  Crashes every 25+ minutes and when saving a ride.  Is it possible to go back to an earlier software revision/

  • I reported this to Garmin support and they told me there was going to be a fix out next week (week of 9/8)

  • There is going to be a fix next week (9/8)

  • That doesn't reassure me.

In my country, for cases such as this exists the expression "see first then believe!". If Garmin follows the discussions in this forum, and I assume they do, they are aware of the existence of this problem for a very long time. But after the many firmware updates we were offered so far, the spontaneous restarts continue to exist. Yesterday at a test drive of only 4.5 km (after a hard reset on firmware 28.20 with all functions/connections off except turn-by-turn navigation) I already had the first restart after 5 minutes. Time and time again it appears that Garmin pursues a policy in which adding new functions has priority over repairing fairly basic functions that are killed with it, such as navigating without any problems.

  • Hi again all.

I just thought I would let you know that I redid the same course today. It took over 4 hours and I didn't have a single Edge crash/reboot.

I decided against rolling back the software after reading there was a fix due. The only thing I did differently was run the 'delete temporary files' from the device reset menu.

So touch wood this seems to have worked for my Edge. Suggest you give it a try.

    Tony
