3x crash during +300km trip

And here we are again...

Yesterday I went for a +300km trip and while navigating the Edge 1040 SOLAR,  spontaneously crashed/broke down.

New Garmin way of saying: time for a break???

There was really nothing going on...Again dissapointed with the device, which costed a small fortune.

Anyone here suffered the same lately and how to solve it?

Am curious about your response.

Kind regards,

Ronald

  • This behaviour is to be expected. My 1040 crashes 2-3 times during a day trip.

  • Any idea how come and how to fix?

  • with normal Garmin maps or with any 3rd party? any CIQ app installed on the Edge?

  • This is also the case with my 1040. The only certainty I have when I take a long ride is that it will reboot by itself at least once, which then leads to a distorted dataset.

  • This behaviour is to be expected

I realise the comment is ironic or "tounge-in-cheek" but the described 1040 behaviour is NOT what I expect nor what I observe. BUT in order to achieve the stability and reliability without crashes, freezes or re-boot I have to significantly limit the functions running, limitations which may not be acceptable to many users and which go against garmin's advertising and function list for the 1040 (or 1050 or other x40 devices)

I disable all "connected" features while riding, all phone and wi-fi and thus all the many functions (messaging, tracking, group anything....that require connection.

I disable all the multitude of overlapping fitness / performance functions / stats etc.

I don't use "turn guidance", I just load a pre built course and follow the course line, mostly using a minimum of "course points" and course point distance field and follow the course line on the map

I minimise sensors, always use a speed sensor and sometimes cadence but nothing else

I do long rides, up to 600kms / 40 hours, usually captured in 1 continuous activity and can be 1 course.

In 3 years my 1040 has never crashed, froze or re-booted, not did my previous 530 & 520 devices. Last crash I had was on a 510 when I was trying to hack it and make it display a map (it did but showed no roads!)

Start with most functions disabled and add them one at a times in your absolute must have preference order and determine what combination of functions will co-exist for the required time.

Until garmin builds a device that does not overload itself with functions you either accept limitations or live with the crashes etc.

And, as a result of these limitations I can squeeze 80 or 90 hours out of a battery charge, reduced a little by judicious night time usage

  • Spontaneous crashes/restarts during a day trip, has became a habit already for the years I use the Edge 1040; on beta and  stable firmware's, including the latest ones. I didn´t had that experience with the models I used in earlier years, like the Edge 1030, 1000, 800, eTrex Vista HCX

These crashes has become a habit just like (a) the habit of Garmin's software designers to ignore this ongoing problem that is known by them for a long time, and (b) my habit to apply a hard reset after every firmware update and to shut down nearly every functionality/connection besides the ones I use for basis navigation (GPS ON, turn-by-turn guidance ON, Open Cycle Map ON, and everything else OFF. I expect much more quality control and support for an expensive unit to which Garmin attaches such great promises. I seem to view this matter differently than how L. Rouge expressed it here before. That gives me the impression that you're accepting the idea of reaching your destination with your expensive new car only by pushing it forward yourself.

  • If I understand correctly, I'm supposed to treat my 1040 as if it were my 2002 wired Cateye, disable my Garmin! RTL515, my heart rate and power meter, and disable all the functionality that justifies a €500 bike computer, except for the navigation, so it only turns on and off when I press the power button?

  • Can you please confirm the below information?

    • Were you navigating a course when this occurred?
    • Were you in a structured workout?
    • Can you confirm what mapping you have installed?
      • Including any 3rd party mapping
    • Would we have permission to view this activity on our side?
      • We would need the date of the ride
    • Do we have permission to email you outside of the forums?
      • Do not share your email here, we pull this from your account
  • No, what I said (& do) is you find the subset of functions that gives you the balance between functionality and stability that you can live with, if you can live with a few crashes per ride than max out on functions, if stability is a priority (as it is for me) than I minimise functions , with any current Garmin you can’t have both. 1040 is over 3 years old now, if they could have fixed the issues then they would have by now. What are you going to do, race out and give them another $1000 on a 1050, they seem to have even more issues. In the mean time I do very long rides and don’t crash, and spend most of the time admiring the view rather than looking at my Garmin every 5 seconds.

ps I have a 21 year old car and a 4 year old phone too and these do everything I need, I guess it’s just me, good luck.

ps, I often help club members that have lots of issues, I find they usually have many many functions enabled that they don’t know what they do, disabling these often eliminates or reduces issues

pps, and yes Garmin should build better software but it’s been going downhill for years, not enough resources perhaps, are they going to see the light on the road to Damascus , maybe not, especially if they are using a Garmin to navigate?

  • Hello Garmin-Blake,

I was navigating a course yes, as that's the reason for owning an edge 1040 solar

    I wasn't in a structured workout, I don't use that feature.

I have installed the maps that come as a standard on the device having TopActive Europe West 2025.10  on,

TopoActive Europe centra 2025.10 on. 3rd Party maps Topo Es and OFM_BNL turned off as I didn't need the detailed maps of these two.

Date of the ride August 23, last Saturday

I herewith confirm that you have permission to view this activity on your side and to email me outside of the forum
