Base Camp Support on the Garmin 1040

I just purchased the Garmin 1040. With the 530, I could open Base Camp on the Mac and the 530 locations could be read. I could save waypoints and courses in Base Camp and then update the device. After the latest firmware update, I can connect to Garmin Express, but the 1040 device doesn't even appear in Finder and there is no connection in Base Camp.

I was hoping to transfer locations from the 530 to the 1040. I believe the Garmin Connect app allows me to import courses (not locations). Is there a Mac or PC app that allows me to do what I could do with Base Camp on he 530?

I am not happy. If I am correct, many consumer's want an easy way of planning trips from the desktop.

Another oddity, before the firmware updated itself, I could browse files on 1040 using Mac Finder. Also, I believe there is still some support on the PC- but limited.

Most Edge users likely not even aware of BaseCamp.

Garmin itself doesn’t do much with BaseCamp (they aren’t really updating it at all.)

It’s fairly clear Garmin wants people to use something else.

A recent firmware version changed the interface to MTP. On Mac you now need for example OpenMTP to connect to the 1040.

  • Thanks you. This addresses the ability to transfer files- but not the ability to use Base Camp. Another oddity, when I enable Android File Transfer and then attempt to shutdown the 1040- it takes a long time a long time to shutdown.

  • II would challenge your assumption that Basecamp is likely not used by many Edge users.

Route planning and data transfer is possible with Connect, Komoot and many others- but a desktop tool can be quicker and easier to work with. At least Android File Checker can be used to transfer files- allowing Mac users to import GPX files from Basecamp and the Internet. But Garmin never really explained the later when they dropped file support on the Mac. Communication was poor and not consumer friendly. I guarantee they got plenty of support calls.

I’m a member of a large bicycle club near NYC with a lot of Garmin users.

There’s a good chance that that I’m the only member who uses BaseCamp (and that use is minimal).

If I am correct, many consumer's want an easy way of planning trips from the desktop.

This is an assumption. Garmin’s actions don’t support it. There are also many websites and not many desktop options.

Route planning and data transfer is possible with Connect, Komoot and many others-

The number of people doing this, almost certainly, overwhelms the number of BaseCamp users (for many years).

but a desktop tool can be quicker and easier to work with.

I definitely know that. But that doesn’t mean there are that many Edge users. It seems that users are more hikers or motorcyclists (really).

And, it’s also the case that Garmin no longer sees BaseCamp as something worth putting a lot of time into. The last update (and it was minimal) was years ago.

As far as I can tell, there aren’t really any alternatives to BaseCamp. On the other hand, the website route planners are easier to use.

Note that I have a lot of investment in BaseCamp. See the following:
