Navigation / Routing

Navigation, 1040 owner and have owned garmin bike computers for years starting with the 800. My biggest issue is the routing, if I want to navigate to a location (Not following a course) why does ut route me along narrow cycle paths / tracks when i have chosen road cycling and avoidance is on for narrow trails

  • Narrow trails ≠ narrow cycle paths/tracks

  • narrow cycle paths / tracks

“Cycle paths” are usually paved. Many cyclists would prefer to use them.

”Track” usually refers to a way that is unpaved (we aren’t taking about railways). Something one could drive a 4x4 on.

”Cycle track” doesn’t appear to be a thing.

    narrow trails

Trails are more like like paths one would use a mountain bike for.

    • I want to ride on roads only suitable for cars. Ut when I use navigate it wants to send me on paths or cycle tracks which I don't want to go on, looked at the settings but there is no way to avoid them, unless someone knows any different
  • Yep.  Basically what I do is lay out the course myself on my computer then download them to the Edge. That's the only way I get the course I want wrt routing, roads, paths, tracks, etc...

  • It seems like some people expect these to work like car navigation devices. The problem those devices are (typically) dealing with is much easier. Drivers generally want the shortest/fastest path (which means highways tend to be preferred) and they don’t care too much if the path is a bit longer. The data for roads is also much better.

Cyclists have different opinions about what sort of ways are more appropriate/safe/preferred. Drivers generally don’t care except for situations that are kind of fringy anyway.

Planning routes is going to be a better approach for a while yet. That’s not always possible but one needs to keep in mind the limitations of having the device generate the route.

  • There’s no way of excluding cycle paths. In the US, these can be “multi use paths”, which some road cyclists might not want to use (they can be crowded with walkers).

Older devices had an auto/car option but that would include highways. A motorcycle option might work (that tends to exclude highways).

I still have no idea what a “cycle track” is.

  • Yeah thats what do create routes its the only way to be able to keep the routing on roads, its just sometimes whilst I'm on a route I may fancy a coffee at a cafe I've used before but not sure if the way from where I am, its this instance that I get routed off the road into cycle paths / tracks (track is mainly for MTB)

  • The MTB paths/tracks should be being excluded with "avoid unpaved".

The map data could be incomplete.

    Can you provide an example?
