Edge 1040 course points auto-deleted??

Hello,

Something strange happened with course points on the Edge 1040.
I created on Garmin Connect a course with special course points (waterstops, lunchbreak etc)  which was send to my device.

Checked whether all points we loaded correctly which was the fact, so I turned off the Edge 1040.

I travelled to the start location and turned on the device. Over 60 % of the course pointed we (auto-?)deleted.
Only few were still in the device.

As a backup i had the GPX of the waypoint loaded as well, so not a real issue, but I am wondering:

How come that the course point of the Gamin Connect route have dissapeared?
If this is common use, than using GC combined with cours points is of no-use at all.

Does anyone has an idea?

Kind regards,

Ronald

  • I can do that, no problem. I have the file stored locally, so I can do that tonight.

To be continued and thanks to all to get the picture in respect to this issue.

  • The underlying issue seems to be that you have been treating Waypoints and Course Points as if they are interchangeable but that is not the case.

A Waypoint is a point on a map that a course will pass through. It is associated with the map, but is not part of the course.

A Course Point is a point embedded in the course with an associated description, typically a turn point but may be a custom cue.

GPX files can contain Waypoints, but an Edge doesn’t support them.

Course points are not supported in GPX files, only supported in .TCX or .FIT files.

Did you check if the missing Waypoints points have been added to converted to Saved Locations on your Edge?

  • Thanks @PeterK_55

I completely understand the idea and difference between CP and WP and exactly for that reason I chose to add course point due to these special points to pass with my group of riders.

I cannot say whether the missing 'course points' were added to the Saved Locations because as a back up I did both variations: course points and waypoints, expecting something to go wrong. And since this was the first time using course points I thought the back up to be a good idea.

what I know for sure: after sending the GC track to the device and checking directly the course points, all of these were in the list Course points. And 60% of these  course points these disappeared, as said the next time I turned on the device. That makes the story hard to follow.

Luckily as I had the waypoints added via the gpx file, I could see these markers although in an other way then via course points.
The idea was to be notified by means of a pop-up on screen when passing (or close to passing) the course point and that failed (for 60% as 40% was still there)

  • Can somebody tell me how to upload a gpx file?
Via insert / image/video/file it doesn't work here

  • But… when importing a GPX containing waypoints Garmin display them exactly the same as newly created course points so someone at the import stage decided that a waypoint and course point are synonymous in the data loading transform. The user gets no indication that a waypoint (GPX) does not become a first-class Course Point, they are edited the same way once within GC etc.
