Hi, the same here. This should be because of the 27.14 firmware. I honestly don't understand this way of doing things from Garmin. However, meanwhile they mend it, I changed the Garmin original USB C cable and it charges again right. Try with another USB C cable.
After the latest update my Edge 1040 Solar tock 11 hrs and 4 Minutes to charge from 3 % to 99 %. (not 100 % is used to charge. After another ride it was down to 63 % and to charge to (again) 99 % to over 4 hours, i.e. changing 10 % takes a good hour now. And I always start the charging process after having totally shut down the Edge. Now at the last charge I also noted that all of a sudden the normal charging screen changed to my ride type screen and I had to again shut it off to continue the charging. Something has seriously changed for the worse. In the past when it was as 100 % that screen stayed on. Now after hitting 99 % the unit seems to turn off. Time Garmin looks into this problem.(the turning off after charging (if that would be 100%, I think is o.k. and a good change. But that sudden very slow charging and sometime switching into the ride type screen needs to be corrected.
same problem!!!!!!!
Same problem..
In addition to previous tests I just did another check using a stopwatch It increased from 44% to 45% in 08:23.53 minutes. While not scientifically checked and not easy done, if at all, with a Solar version and different time in various sunny conditions, after numerous rides I also believe battery usage has increased. Anyway the long need for charging is totally outside the unit's specification. It's just two years old - and replaced an Edge 1000 where the power button had fallen out. I am charging it on my Windows PC using the same original Garmin USB cable which came with the unit as in the past when charging was within specification. This sudden degraded charging performance seems to have started after the latest update. I have not seen any communication from Garmin that perhaps this unit can/must now be charged by a stronger charger. Not even sure if it is possible to make such a change just via software.
Come on Garmin software developers, PLEASE restore the now rather poorly operating tool back to it's better days. I now feel stupid having recommended an EDGE to three of my younger friends.
I have lots of Garmin tools and may now be looking at a NON-Garmin watch (but working with other Garmin tools which my Apple iWatch unfortunately does not) to keep count of my HR. My Garmin HMR Pro Plus cannot correctly count my HR as I often have some PVB's. (based on lots of lots of tests my Cardiologist not concerned even if I have 20,000 a day) A watch (using a different - apparently less accurate - method) is needed in my case. Nothing wrong otherwise the Pro-Plus is a good unit. But showing a HR sometimes around 200 beats (my cardiologist would b e very concerned if such were true for a 91 year old when actual rate is considerably less and in line with my work-out/age (confirmed by iWatch and manual count). It screws up in my case lots of health records, the reason I am looking for another method.
garmin just simply want to prevent you from losing the activity data when using the Edge - the philosophy is pretty simple and effective:
when you are unable to charge your device, you cannot use it, so you will not lose any data - it is brilliant in a way, I'd say, you should be grateful for that! ;)
Mine charges as fast as it loses battery percentage per hour (like 3%). At this tempo it will be fully loaded again on saturday morning when I want to ride my bike again... God damn it Garmin...

In addition to previous tests I just did another check using a stopwatch It increased from 44% to 45% in 08:23.53
So, I did a test, too, to see if my device is affected (27.14):
my device was on 84% at test start. I loaded until it self turned off at 100%. It took 1 hour and 4 minutes (4 min per %point).
How I load: I plug in the cable, then the Edge starts and boots. After booting is finished, I turn off the Edge. Then the screen goes black, only showing the current charge state. After a while at 99%, the device self turns off when 100% are reached. Then unplug the cable and let the device boot - now it shows 100% charge state.
Thanks for your feedback mcinner1. That's twice as fast mine charges. And it would mean 400 minutes or 6 hrs. and 40 minutes for a full charge v/s a stated full charging time of 2 to 3 hours allowing that this may be less that average to help selling the product,
Previously I had no complains as it was usually charged after syncing it via Garmin Express to Garmin, I then made sure it only showed the current charge state while attached to the PC with the Garmin supplied cable, while viewing the details of my last ride and doing computer work for around an hour or so and it was charged ready for my next bike trip. Trips of usually of 2 to 5 hour duration, depending on distance and time having a drink and bite to eat of various duration. I don't recall that it previously shut itself off but may be mistaken, If in fact true and that the 27.14 update affected this (good) change, there may have been other inadvertently not good changes made to the charging system given I am not the only user voicing this problem and your experience too might not be in line with "stated" specifications. But I read somewhere that these type of batteries may charge at different speeds during the charging cycle. Not sure it's true. I also don't necessarily charge it to 100 % every time depending on PC work time but ensure it's is around 80% Nor do I use it down to a really low point, the reason I charge it after every ride. unless still around 80% (seldom) The only time it was at 3% when I had forgotten to turn it off after a ride.
I never checked details until suddenly all changed for the worse when I looked into it and did my stated checking. The cable still looks brand new and certainly works to connect to Express. Attaching external hard drives to the same USB port show no slowdowns, nor did any PC hardware checks report any problems. Somewhere in the back of my mind I believe I read in some Garmin manual to only use the correct Garmin Cable so I have not tried another cable.
