Map management on my Edge 1040 Non-Solar

I was trying to update the USA map on my 1040 non-solar and got an error part way in to the process. I assume it was because I had insufficient space for the map to be downloaded.

I looked around, and found the suggestion to delete the .IMG files  from the 1040 and reload the maps using Garmin Express. I now have tons of space, but Garmin Express is not offering to update maps.  Do I need to delete other file types?  I also did a device reset.  Garmin Express still does not offer maps to be added to my device.

What do I need to do to get to the point of loading maps onto my device?

  • I think I found what I have to do.  I clicked on Topoactive under Map Details, and selected the US, Canada & Alaska, and Middle America, then Apply Changes.  Maps are in the process of downloading now.  I will figure out how much of Europe I can fit in the 32GB of memory after these maps are complete.

  • I added Western and Central Europe, and just about exhausted the 32GB of memory on the 1040.  There was only about 500MB (half a gigabyte) free space.  I deleted rides from last year and this January to get some space back, but I may have to delete a map to have the device be functional.

  • I presume you have looked into the ClimbPro extra data in \Garmin\SQL\INTERNAL, all the .db files , multi GB, containing data for users to "search" for climbs (IMHO a perverse pass time, I am ok with climbs absolutely necessary to a route but don't go "searching" for them!) and to place the annoying little mountains all over the map.  I believe says they are not necessary for the actual climbpro stuff (which I don't use at all) but just the searching? If you don't want / need them they can be manually deleted or at least moved off the device to test their relevance to you?

  • I wasn't aware of those files or their purpose. They come to over 6GB on my Edge. I'm trying to figure out how the .db files relate to the .img files.  That would allow me to delete .db files related to the Europe maps, for example.

    Thanks for expanding my knowledge!
