Edge 1040 WiFi Sync Painfully Intermittent - still. FW 27.14

The software of the 1040 is abysmal.

WiFi sync is a question of pure luck. Sometimes it works, mostly not. On the same network. This is ridiculous. I'm myself an embedded engineer implementing WiFi backends on embedded systems. This is definitely a problem on Garmin's side. And it persists. The forum is full of customers complaining. What a bad bad customer service.

The problem is: other vendors are even worse. Perhaps not regarding WiFi but on other sectors. Basically you pay a premium price for mediocre mobile platforms with even less functionality than a smartphone and a catastrophic software stack.

I sometimes ask myself: What are the team riders doing? In our company I use my products at home as often as possible and write tickets for everything inconvenient/buggy I observe. Does nobody use the devices close to the developers? Why is the development so decoupled from customer feedback?

Arrgh - the market is missing competition.

Garmin: Fix this for Spaghetti Monster's sake!!!

I keep a list of extreme shortcomings. But I won't share it publicly. Garmin can buy my proposals/tickets if they really care about incremental product improvement. Or hire me on the long run (currently I'm lacking the time unfortunately)

  • Being forced to sync via BT is another modern form of torture. I thought I won't suffer sync problems when I change to Garmin - I was on Polar previously. What an illusion.

Sync on BT is buggy as well. You can bet that power saving mode on the 1040 or Android will disrupt your sync operations. I'm currently wasting almost an hour trying to get my %(& training session to sync. This is soooo bad.

  • I'm seeing the same thing, WiFi sync hasn't worked for the last couple firmware versions and isn't working on 27.14.  Please fix this Garmin!

  • dint know about wifi sync, have never used that. Phone is always with me when riding, when I finish I save the ride and in less than a minute it is synced automatically, maybe try this route?

  • I keep my phone with me when i ride as well but unfortunately it does not consistently automatically sync via Bluetooth right after the ride.  Any ride over a couple hours doesn't seem to BT sync unless i specifically open the connect app, keep it open and make sure my phone (iphone 15) doesn't sleep for the ~3-10min it takes to actually transfer.  WiFi transfers on my 1030 plus worked flawlessly and almost instantly, wifi transfer on my enduro 2 works flawlessly and almost instantly when i get home, the 1040 however does not.

  • On my Ubiquiti access point, I changed the 2.4GHz network to "WPA2 only" with 20MHz bandwidth. On my Edge, I re-entered the password for the network (it didn't change but who knows). Since I did these changes, it reliably worked for me.

If that doesn't make it work, I would try manually selecting a channel.
