Power meter connection lost during ride – Edge 1040, FW 27.14

Device Model: Edge 1040 + Rally RS200
FW: Edge 1040 – 27.14 / Rally – 4.1
Battery Status: OK

Issue:

The connection with the power meter (Garmin Rally) was lost for about an hour. By the time I noticed, power statistics were already compromised.

  • Device: Edge 1040

  • Firmware: 27.14

  • Power meter: Garmin Rally RS200

  • Sensor firmware: 4.1

  • Battery status: OK

  • Symptoms: No power/cadence readings for ~1 hour mid-ride

  • Reconnection was automatic, no manual intervention

  • Affected metrics: Power, cadence, L/R balance, platform offset, power phase

  • Issue not observed on firmware 27.13

Note: Cadence data is present only because I use a separate cadence sensor for redundancy.

  • Update: same issue occurred again:
On yesterday’s ride, after a mass sensor disconnection, I noticed that both power and cadence were stuck at 0.
    power&cadence data missing
Surprisingly, both the Rally power meter and the cadence sensor still showed as “connected” in the sensor list.
    Sensors apperar to be connected
Only after manually disconnecting and reconnecting the sensors did the data resume.
    data is back
Unfortunately, the recording was already compromised; and this happened on what turned out to be my best time ever on a route I ride almost daily.
    Recorded data
I know that correlation does not imply causation, and this behaviour wasn’t newly introduced in version 27.14, but there are growing signs that this version has made things worse.

  • I have the dual sided Giant power meter that came installed on the bike.  It loses connection exactly twice every ride after the  update. If I don't catch the disconnection, my ride data is shot. If i catch it early enough, I can disconnect and reconnect to get the recording to start again.

  • This happened to me today. Quarq power sensor. First part of the ride to coffee stop everything was fine. After resumption noticed power was reading 0, mid-ride tapped to go to Home then sensors and noticed the sensor was listed as connected but power was still 0. Luckily I was also recording on my Garmin Epix watch which was unaffected, I just saved that one and discarded the Edge 1040 one. But so annoying, by now I'm used to using the power numbers for pacing.

This seems different to the few instances before where a sensor was actually lost connection, where you see a missing value instead of 0 in the data field.

    Seems like a real bug.

  • What did you do when you stopped?

    Left the unit on?

    Put it into suspend mode?

    Powered it off?

  • I put it in sleep mode, as I usually do. Then woke up when ready to ride again, spun the cranks to make sure power meter woke up.

  • do you use sleep mode or power off mode?

  • Just to clarify my case: I always use full power off between rides, never sleep mode. In my experience, sleep mode almost always causes issues with sensors and accessories not reconnecting properly.

However, the dropouts I reported here are not related to any pause or restart. Both incidents happened mid-ride, with no stops or interaction with the device.

Also worth noting: the cases I described here involve the power meter specifically. Similar issues i have involving other accessories (e.g. lights, speed/cadence sensors, radars, cameras) are described in their own threads.

  • After update to V27.14 my vector3 powermeter started disconnecting/reconnecting after ~43min. Three times each 10min then followed by each 2-3min. That drives me crazy. Even cadence sometimes disconnects/reconnect but only a few times during 2h20min. Batteries of cadence and powermeter are NEW. I didn't use standby and we had our first stop after 1h20min.Any ideas how to solve that problem?

  • Hey can I ask you, how did you updated the divice Bluetooth, Wifi or Pc?
I have a suspicious that update some how could be messing up Garmins Directory files... I have problem with updating and my connect IQ stopped working. After long search I mage to hold on directory files from other person who don't have any issues. That solution solved the issue.
The biggest problem is that you can't do full wipe and reinstall Garmin directory. Best Is to have a hold from someone full directory and try to replace it...
If system have some broken files, you can't really verify what is actually broken or not.
