Which 'Distance' metric allows me to show ride distance?

I use the Garmin 1040 Edge Solar. I want to show the distance of my ride in progress on my Home screen. Which metric from the 'Distance' category will show me how many kilometers I have cycled on my ride? Is it 'Lap Distance?' The odometer shows how far I have cycled since I have begun using my Garmin, but that doesn't show me how far I have ridden on my ride in progress. Any / all assistance appreciated.

Distance is the metric to show how far you've traveled since the start of the activity.

It should automatically change to km after 999m

Thanks PeterK_55. But the 'Distance' metric shows the distance in Meters, not Kilometers. Can I adjust it to read Kilometers? If so, where/how?

It's not important, but I have seen 1000 meters displayed on my Edge a few times. Then it displays kilometers as expected.

Thanks so much, colin-campbell. In my latest ride (yesterday) this is exactly how it worked. The 'distance' metric read meters until 1000 meters, then automatically switched to kilometers. Worked perfectly...thanks so much.
