Once again, before the bug nighttime descent, I reached into my backpack to grab what was supposed to be the fresh Varia UT800, only to find it warm and almost drained. It had been on the entire time without me knowing. My Edge had powered on both headlights, even though only one was intended for use.
This isn’t just about headlights. Tail lights behave the same way. If you carry a second RTL as a spare, or switch between seatpost and saddlebag setups, there’s no way to tell them apart or control them individually.
There seems to be:
-
No option to name lights for easy identification
-
No way to select which ones turn on automatically
-
No visible battery percentage or runtime estimate
These are marketed as smart lights. For €100 apiece, we deserve smarter behavior. At the very least, they shouldn't turn on and drain themselves in a backpack — something $20 “dumb” lights reliably don’t do.
