Garmin Edge 1040 fails to reconnect Garmin sensors (especially radar/lights) after waking from sleep

Hello,

I'm encountering a recurring issue with my Garmin Edge 1040. When the device enters sleep mode—either automatically after a timeout or manually (e.g., during a short break to avoid alerts)—it often fails to reconnect to all sensors upon waking.

All my sensors are made by Garmin and fully updated with the latest firmware. This issue has been present since 2022, with some variation in how frequently it reproduces depending on firmware version, but it has never been fully resolved.

The affected sensors vary: sometimes it's speed, cadence, temperature, or power. But the most serious failures involve radar and lights, as they directly impact rider safety. The only indication is a small blinking icon in the top-right corner, which can be easily missed while riding.

Sometimes I can manually reconnect a missing sensor; other times I have to delete and re-add it. Lights are especially problematic—often I need to disable the entire lighting network and hope they reconnect. In some cases, restarting the Edge is the only solution.

I also use a Varia RCT715, and while it's unclear whether the camera resumes recording, that’s less critical. The real problem is that key safety features like radar or the rear light can silently stop working.

If this cannot be fixed completely, at the very least, please consider adding a visible and persistent alert when one or more sensors fail to reconnect after the device wakes from sleep. This would significantly reduce the risk of riding without knowing a safety device is offline.

Thank you,

  • Same erratic behavior. I switch off the 1040 even while riding and relaunch it; either 1 or 2 iteration and the problem disappears! In the last months a new surprising feature came up: battery in charging mode indicates a certain percentage and as unplugged the number and battery duration plunge.

I always jumped to the latest Garmin version to overcome key failures (starting from Edge 1000 with 2 units failed due to the switch on button, the 1030 lost stability after one time I caught rain) but now there even isn't a more recent model which appears superior to the older ones.

Hopefully Garmin developers are listening to their devices' users

  • The problem with restarting the Edge is that it interrupts the activity—and that has consequences. It's not a big deal if you're doing a short local loop and can stitch the .fit files together later using Fit File Tools. But when you're at the end of a 250 km ride, it's getting dark, and the rain starts falling, it's incredibly frustrating to lose your entire session data, start a new recording, and just hope that the Edge will take into account at least some of the previous session’s context.

I’m not looking for workarounds — I expect the underlying issues to be fixed. I didn’t buy these devices from some $5 vendor in Asia. I invested in a system that promised seamless integration and long-term reliability — and I expect proper support even after the purchase.

I’ve bought all these devices at launch and have been hoping with every firmware update that this would get fixed — but so far, no luck. And now we’re probably getting close to end of support, which makes it even more frustrating.
