How to Verify Course Points pre Ride?

Dales Divide, 370miles and course points did not show on Beta 27.09/27.10 in the list page or Distance to Next. Very sad as can only really confirm they are working once out on course. Other long courses on 26.x previously have shown CPs OK. I logged this as a beta bug but not sure if it exists in other versions.

But this forum query is… Is there a way to verify CPs from home (on the device)?

This is the route I sync’d all I have changed is to make it public for this report https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/345991466

As CPs show in Connect and it Sync’d OK with the Edge I believe it is a valid bug report and to loose course points on ultra rides would be a very bad thing! But in the meantime… thanks in advance

  • I have a course with course points for testing that starts in the street just outside my home. While the area is fairly built-up I generally have GPS set to auto select (it does not seem to use much if any more battery). I can get a GPS fix by standing next to a window and can load the course and press Ride and press start and then scroll through the screens including the course point list. (which I just did, I am on 27.09b, just verified this still works and list was displayed ok and CRS PT Dist and WPT Next fields displayed correctly, I have Turn Guidance disabled, rarely use it)

Have you verified that the Course Points are enabled for the Course (in the Course settings) (I am sure you have but just asking as some FW or Map updates can change some settings)

Otherwise can't think what might stop them displaying

  • How were those course points added to the course. I see 18 points in the file, but they are all at a distance of zero meters into the course. The issue is with the course file.

  • How was the course created. Was it created in GC or created somewhere else and imported.

  • Course points are working only if they added in GC. After that you have to sync this course with your device.

  • But the issue cannot be with the course file because the GPX schema for course points / waypoints <wpt> does NOT have a “distance" element, just location and optional fields. It is the role of the device or importer to, ideally dynamically because you could go off route, calculate Distance to Next. Coros Dura imported same GPX as Garmin Connect and did this as expected.  In this case route came from organisers and points added in the rather excellent (and free) GPX.studio

Many events provide route and waypoint/course point GPX for water, food, first aid etc. Are you saying they must be re-edited in Connect before syncing. Sounds like a Connect bug rather then Edge but all Garmin ecosystem.

My original query remains, how did you check/confirm the erroneous Distance 0 as per the screenshot? many thanks.

  • If you are importing a course the GC takes what it is given. Does the site where this course come from support either FIT or TCX as an export format. Those two formats correctly handle course points. GPX does not really support course points.

  • In terms of what I did to check it I downloaded the course as FIT file and used the FITDSK to convert it from a binary to text. I would not expect most users to do that.

  • Would you be able to provide the GPX you used?

  • OK, so the original file was a GPX and contained <wpt> elements.
These convert to Garmin Connect "Course Points" on import. It all LOOKS fine in Garmin Connect and so when I sync'd I assumed it was all fine.  In GC, if I toggle the Course Points tick-box in the legend they turn on and off. They all appear in the correct places. If I edit one in Garmin Connect and then export the GPX file the Course Point is correctly exported as a <wpt> element with the name edit and type.  So I am (remain) confused as to how importing a file with <wpt> / Course Points did not include them once they got to the device.

Original file attached, -- actually I cant find the original export from GPX.studio but this is a recreation. GPX header says "gpx creator="Garmin Connect" version="1.1" but I assume GPX.studio writes that for better import compatibility. Regardless, it looks like a GPX standard schema and includes <wpt> elements and the long <trk>

Appreciate you exported and used FITDSK, but that's assuming another external tool is processing correctly. I think there is still uncertainty as to why GC does not handle imported <wpt> elements but if they are created / edited in GC then they are saved as <wpt> elements.

My only take away so far is that if I get a GPX with waypoints I need to edit or duplicate them all within GC which is a bit nuts.

  • Check on your 1040, are the WPT ELEMENTS being imported as 1040 Locations rather than course points?  IMO it’s better to use .fit or .TCX and even better to use a better planning site like RWGPS (free version completely adequate) which always “just” works, other sites / approaches waste time which could be used for riding
