1040 crashing during route calculation at 39%

So I have had the 1040 crash a few times while calculating routes, most recently a 326km route I was riding at the weekend. I started the ride and let it calculate while I was riding as I knew which direction I was going at the start.

Multiple times it crashed at 39% after hanging there.

A google search suggested that it was due to an error with the mapping. Turning the maps off in activity profiles - navigation - map - configure maps and just leaving the worldwide DEM basemap on solved it, the route calculated very quickly and although I lost most of the turn by turn instructions I could follow the track on the map screen.

I hope deleting and reinstalling the maps through Garmin Express will fix the problem properly now I am back home - I will update this thread

In the meantime, I'm sharing here in the hope that this gets indexed to google for anyone else stuck and frustrated at the roadside.

  • I will also add, there was a third party map on the device which was installed by someone else, I have deleted it too just now as it may have been in conflict. it was mapping for trails /off road riding which I don't do. I had to use macdroid to delete it on the Mac.

  • I had the same problem and it worked out with your solution. I deactivated all maps that wasn't Garmin and then it worked well. Thank you.

  • I'm glad it worked for you! Now I have reinstalled the maps it works exactly as it should, gives turn by turn at the right times, doesn't hang like it did at junctions, and most importantly doesn't seem to stick at 39% either when calculating routes. So I'm pleased. I also had a third party elevation data map (for off road)  installed which I have deleted from the device which might have been part of the issue, conflicts in the different files.
