Deferring the update

When there is a new update, my Edge 1040 usually asks me just before the ride if I want to update. I usually answer with Remind me later (or something like that), finish the ride and update once I get home.

This time, it told me that update will happen when I turn device off next time. I don't want that! Why don't I have control over updates anymore?

So, during the ride, we have arrived to a stop. I wanted to send Edge 1040 to sleep, but instead, it started the update procedure in the middle of my ride! Why? I did not power it off, just did short power button press to send it to sleep (so that Varia stops beeping).

After update and restart of device, I continued the ride and had some completely crazy stats, like my TSS was over 4 thousand, my average HR was 225 or some nonsense like that. At the end, I saved the ride, the ride was synced to Strava OK, but it was nowhere to be found in my stats. Ever since that update, my training load / accute load is completely wrong and 1040 is messing with the data from FR265 too!

So, I am going back to previous version, but I don't want to update anymore. I am owner of the device I and I want the option to say NO to update and decide if and when I will allow it.

  • When you get the "Install Now" / "Install Later" screen rather than picking one you can press the Back-Arrow (top left of that screen). This will cancel the update and (in my experience) stops the question from re-appearing entirely on each power-up for the next week or two, don't know what re-triggers it but if/when you get the question again then just press the back-arrow again for another week or 2+ of not getting it. Has worked like this of the last 6 months . Of course Garmin can change this anytime but that would require a software update?

  • The OP tells, „this time“ he was not asked.

This time, it told me that update will happen when I turn device off next time.
  • That’s what it does if you say update “later”, rather than “now” and the reason why you use the back-arrow, then you have full control, if you decide you want the update you can initiate it via the menu, system, about & select the Software Update option, second from the top, it tells you the version it has ready to install.

  • Earlier, when I would say "Update Later", it would ask me again next time. And I could postpone that way many times.

Last update was different, after tapping "Update Later", it told me it was going to update when I power off. It performed the update when I wanted to send it to sleep.

Thanks @L.Rouge for the tip with back arrow. I did not notice it before, I will pay attention next time and try to use it!
