Garmin Segments - Strava Segments - How to get any segments to popup?

Are there detailed, step by step instructions for getting either of these to work with navigation on?  I will settle for consistent popups with navigation off, but that hurts since 90% of my riding is in areas I do not know very well.

I have starred segments in Strava Premium, sync, ride the route and NOTHING! LOL.  No popups.  This is with the route created in RideWGPS, Garmin, and Strava.  Neither route pops up the segment while navigating.  The downhill segments (lots of 0.0% or anything with a negative gradient) don't even sync when using Strava segments.  

Using Garmin segments has not been much better.  I was under the impression the Garmin segments worked even with navigation going.  I see lots of green dots on the map for segments, even if I did not add them.  However, nothing pops up on the Edge to ride the segments.  Segments I have added do popup if I turn navigation off.  The map with the green dots and climb indicators are inconsistent. In 2 out of the 3 climbs, the climb indicator does not show.  Plenty of segments of which non popup when navigation is on.

How in the world do we get segments to popup consistently using navigation?  Thanks in advance.

    Ok, so I see a possible reason why all of the green bubbles may be on the map even though I did not star them.  There is an option in Strava to show popular segments in your area.  That's fine, but I selected Garmin segments.  So why are all of the green bubbles present?  And none of them popup the segment data screen when you get close to them, even with navigation off. 


    I built a short, looping route in GC, RideWGPS, and Strava.  There are 3 uphill segments on the route.  I tried each route but neither of the 3 routes works for showing segments during navigation.  I tried with Garmin segments first and then Strava segments.   I can't find an extensive explanation of how this is supposed to work on either of the company's forums Disappointed

    This case is simple. You want Strava Live Segment? Buy different device, wahoo or karoo. This is what it is :(

    Oh no!!  So I put a lot of money into the Garmin ecosystem.  It seems as if the answer is always switch to a different brand.  Well, I sold my Garmin Fenix watch.  I guess the Edge is next and I'll wait for the HRM to flake out again and replace it with a different brand.  This sucks as I recommended Garmin to quite a few of my fellow riders and they feed me their questions which I in turn post here.  Truly disappointing.

    Great description of the issue you face as this has bothered me for a very long time.  As mentioned in the chain, the Hammerhead Karoo has this feature.  I'm not going to switch from my Garmin 1040, but instead will hold out hope that this gets elevated by the Garmin product team and added in the near future.  Many riders with Garmins ask the same thing.  I just don't think that enough people are expressing the interest in this feature on this forum. If Hammerhead can do it, I'm sure Garmin can.

    Live segments do not work while navigating.

    They do work only while free roaming.

    They are shown on the map (which yo can switch off separately) even while navigating, but the dedicated pop-up only shows only while free roaming.

    Has always been like that with Garmin.

    Live segments while navigation sounds like a premium feature in Connect+ xD
