Does anyone have a 26.18 Edge 1040 GUPDATE.GCD file I can use to revert from current beta? Current constant reboots in last 27.x minor versions is untenable.

  • There is a 27.09B this morning that addresses some "reboot" issues and "improved device stability", maybe ?

Otherwise I don't have a 26.18 but I am not sure reverting is now possible with the new MTP file system. I tried to revert to a previous beta I had when the 27.07B was revealed to have removed the MapTheme* and it did not work, did nothing?

    (*Restored in 27.09)

  • I tried that, rebooted like three times already randomly. :(

  • That's a pain, I personally don't have reboot issues but I am pretty light in my demands on the device.

You might try (if already haven't)

Remove / Disable functions likely to be processor / memory intensive (especially "connections")

"Factory" Device Reset (Delete Data & Reset Settings) in the System > Device Reset menu, can then restore most stuff via GC Mobile (having done a Sync before reset), have to manually reconfigure Phone / Wi-Fi and some CIQ apps / fields (best to leave this off at first as some can be suspect in the first action

    Clear anything in NewFiles

Remove some Activities & Courses (via menu UI as this also deletes "other" related course files in Cache and other directories) if you have a lot

    Good Luck

  • It's not possible.

    See here.

    Edit:

It is possible like the watches.

    Look into the zip-file.

  • Despite what it says there it was possible up to version 24.54 / 25.22 when the MTP file system was introduced. I did it many times pre MTP.

The difference is that the GUPDATE file was previously a complete self contained version but is now just a "patch" ie a smaller difference file from an older version to a newer version, it appears the "update" process won't do a backdating difference.

So the result is the same, it is now not possible.

  • it is now not possible.

It is possible, even with MTP. I've done it.

Along with the switch to MTP, the update mechanism was changed to that found on the 1050 and newer watches. As such, you are now looking for "GUPDATE.GSP" instead of "GUPDATE.GCD".

As far as I can tell, 26.18 is only an incremental update, so you'd have to install 26.17 first, and then acquire the 26.18 patch file separately (or just let it update on its own via WiFi).

A link to a thirdparty firmware archive can be found here:
    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/375880/garmin-edge-1040-firmware-21-18/1796961
Official 26.17 should have a SHA1SUM of 178dd8058bf33eece0c9d86972f3d11b1efd7257. Make sure to check this to avoid downloading malicious firmware.

Regarding downgrading to an older version being blocked, look at the beta wiki instructions and keep in mind that "backdating" is only "unsupported" due to missing official firmware files, not because the general instructions (e.g. those applicable to watches) would not work. However, while downgrading to 26.17 this way worked fine for me, it is unsupported by Garmin, potentially untested, and might brick your device. You have been warned, so only proceed at your own risk and if you know what you are doing.

  • Thanks, I appreciate your efforts in the beta forum, hopefully you can get some action. Maybe I am just lucky or I don’t demand much from my Garmin but I have taken every beta version in the last 3 years and never had a problem. My recent downgrade wish was due to the unannounced removal of the MapTheme in 27.07 but that is now resolved by 27.09

  • I have tried it.

It's not possible for me to go from 27.xx to 26.17 with my original saved file.

    Name: GUPDATE_26.17-full.GSP
    Größe: 40019731 Bytes (38 MiB)
    SHA1: 178DD8058BF33EECE0C9D86972F3D11B1EFD7257

Have you tried it in same firmware level 26.xx to 26.17?

    Edit:

    It is possible.

Look at Readme in watches. Also from 27.xx to 26.xx.

  • Have you tried it in same firmware level 26.xx to 26.17?

I've gone from 27.07 to 26.17, but it is very unlikely that the exact version will matter.

I suspect you might not have found the right instructions yet, or not followed them to the letter (e.g. it might not work with the exact filename you posted). Make sure to go where the forum announcement posts say you should go when you want to backdate a watch (don't just skim the post, read everything), then download the respective zip file, check that you got the GSP one, and understand what is written in the readme.

I'd rather not post the full (yet simple) instructions here, because I really do not want people to brick their devices and then pester Garmin support. I hope you can understand. Good luck, you can do it!

  • Thank you very much.

I have looked into the zip-files.

Now it's working and it's very easy.
