Strava have confirmed live segments can not be used while riding a course - is there a definitive Garmin position on what works and what doesn’t

Hey folks - got a reply from Strava today, as their site provides info that Garmin courses and segments don’t work together (their reply is quoted below)

For context - I’d asked them about live segments, after reading something on their website and asked them if this was a Strava or a Garmin thing (their response is below)

There are threads on this, in the forums here, and I’m trying to understand if there is a definitive guide on a way to use live segments while riding a ‘course’ (Garmin’s language for following a route)

As Garmin’s are advertised as being live segment compatible I’m still (as a new user) trying to get my head round why Garmin have chosen to code this in a way that makes following a route (eg unfamiliar territory) and also timing ourselves on segments on the way, as mutually exclusive

I’ve seen posts about people trying to use Strava routes, Garmin connect routes and Komit routes, and it feels like it would be useful to have a single deconomics guide on this (or is it simply “Garmin’s don’t do live segments in the way that I (or many others) would like“ (I’m also aware that segment within segment doesn’t work from another question)

“Thank you for reaching out to Strava support. At this time, Strava Live Segments cannot be used when following a course via your Garmin device.
This is currently a limitation on Garmin's end.”

  • What I can say… Garmin is not delivering here (similarly to other areas). I don’t see any technical reason why my stared segments wouldn’t pop up while riding a Course. It can detect a climb (even without a Course !).

”Garmin supports Strava Segments” is one fat lie, sorry…

  • Yeah - it’s a shame. I’ve swapped back to a Wahoo … lesson learned on buying stuff without thinking about stuff like this. Never occurred to me that the software side was like this. Seems a bit strange.

  • So Strava segments will work if you create and use a Strava course and that course is then synced to Garmin Connect.

The Strava course creation process matches your starred segments and will embedded them in the course they send to Garmin Connect. When the course is executed it will run those embedded segments.

  • Create a route on strava.

Star to sync to garmin connect

Reopen the course on strava en edit it, and save it again

Now segment work on garmin following a course

    You welcome

It cost me month of research to find a fix to this.

    You can do a test:

1 Create a route with a starred segment in it on strava

2 Sync and open the route on your 1040. As you ca  see no segment..

3 Edit the route on strava (no need to change anything only click edit and save it again)

    4 sync again the 1040

5 start again the same route and now the segment are there.

No idea why or how but it work.

I'm worried to share the way to solve it because probably they gonna ruin also this solution and change something and break again everything but I don't want other like me search the Internet for month and month to find the solution.
