Issues with Komoot routes

I've noticed that when I use a route made with Komoot on my 1040, there's often a duplicate route/line showing up on the map screen (see the attached image). Yesterday, during a 100k ride, this problem got even worse. My 1040 kept thinking I was off track and kept suggesting reroutes for me. I ignored those suggestions, and eventually, it said I was back on route. I think this might be related to the duplicate routes?

I make my routes using Komoot and then send them to my Garmin device using the "Send to Garmin" option. I can access them from the Routes or Courses section on my Garmin. I have the Komoot Connect IQ app for Garmin, but I don't really use it. This morning, I did a shorter route that I also made with Komoot and didn't have any problems, so maybe the issues come up with longer routes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • This can indeed happen sometimes. The darker purple line is the path from the Komoot tour. In the example you show this path does not match the road on the map used on the Garmin. The Edge will sort of recalculate the course to map it to roads on the map, that’s why the magenta line differs.

Not sure if it’s related to the length of the tour, but you may want to check in Komoot whether the tour actually follows the road you want to cycle.

  • Well, it’s good to know I’m not crazy, but is there something we can do to fix this? Perhaps add more waypoints in Komoot?

  • In the example you give, how does the tour in Komoot look like? Can you post a screenshot of the same part of the tour?

You could try adding more waypoints, but you would need to know where to add them. If Komoot does show the route correctly, it will be difficiult to determine where to place the additional waypoints...

  • Here is the completed tour on Komoot: https://www.komoot.com/nl-NL/tour/1933652117?ref=itd&share_token=ahhZH2L2m2ayiLmt43IWcSQ2kxoihzvS1MWI3n1PUmPZHJt2l6

and planned and imported from: https://www.komoot.com/nl-NL/tour/1932908362?ref=itd&share_token=auCsD3MsfemVXEPYfv9C3ix1SPECSAzI471SIiz2mltCsR0Jl0&ref=its

and that particulier turn looks good in Komoot as it shows the tour nicely on the cycle path parallel to the road (it’s near the end of the tour between the towns of Zeist and Bunnik in case you want to have a look at the tour yourselves. so is the issue with farming importing the route?

And why do I see two lines on the 1040?

  • IDK.  But I think it's possible the Komoot IQ app is causing the problem.  I would try removing it from my Edge.  Another option is rather than sending the course to the Garmin from the Komoot website.  Lay out the course on the website, but then access it from the Komoot IQ app.

  • I think it's because the route exported from Komoot contains trackpoints that are spaced a bit too far, leading to the exported track not completely following the actual road. Wanted to post a screenshot but the Garmin forum software doesn't let me (again...).

So it depends on the actual curve in the road whether this will be an issue. Unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do here. You could try downloading the tour via the Komoot Connect IQ app instead of using "Send to Garmin".

  • I export the route as GPX and then import it into Garmin Connect. There I check the route for glitches and possibly add some course points such as "pancakes" or "water tap". Then I send it to the device. My experience is that this works better and there are fewer mistakes with navigation.

  • Seems cumbersome and not the intended way (which seems broken Stuck out tongue). I have reached out to Komoot as well so hope they report back with a proper solution.

  • I actually had the same problem today on a run with my Garmin Fenix. At the middle point of a bridge it suddenly told me to do a sharp right and it was also slightly off in other places. I planned it in komoot and accessed it through my running courses. I'm also in the Utrecht area but I don't think it has something to do with that. Looking at the komoot route on my phone again it seems to be correct, so there might be a mismatch between Garmin's maps and komoot's maps.
