Prevent Garmin Connect app from installing firmware update and backup / restore of installed datafiels / apps / glances

Hi there,

---------------------------------------

TL;DR

Is there a way to backup and restore installed datafiels / apps / glances on an Edge 1040 in case you need to roll back to an old firmware because you accidentally installed a new messed up one and some of your datafiels / apps / glances in the store meanwhile have a higher minimum firmware requirement and you can't download them from there again?

When my Edge 1040 is connected to my IPad, I can see that Garmin Connect is copying a "software update" wihout asking me. I don't see a switch for deactivating this and I don't see a switch in the Edge 1040 for deactivating auto updates. Am I missing something?

---------------------------------------

I'Ve posted a thread about the first question over in the Fenix 7 forum, but the question is pretty well the same for my Edge 1040:
https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-7-series/407333/backup-and-restore-of-installed-datafields-apps-glances

Regarding the second question, every time I connect my Edge 1040 to Garmin Express, it copies a gupdate file that I have to delete from it before disconnecting. I'm not sure if the device will ask me if I want to install the update or simply do it, so I'm careful.
But recently I noticed, that while being connected to my IPad and having Garmin Connect running, it started to copy a software update. Also here I don't know, if I will be asked if I want to install it once copying has finished, or if it will just do it, I don't find any switch for this neither in my Edge nor in Garmin Connect.

Also  my comment towards your software development departmens is pretty well the same here. I have a backup of firmware 24.19 which runs stable and fine for me and I'm prepared for the worst case since Garmin software constantly tries to push updates on my Edge without asking me! Please stop this.

Thanks and best regards,

Thomas

  • IDK, and have very limited experience with this, but so far:  In Garmin Express on my windows PC, I can set the schedule for updates.  Choices include, among others, never and custom.  That said, I get updates over wifi or BT but it's always asked if I want to install them afterward.  As far as data screens and other configurable options, these have been stored and possible to reinstate on the Connect app on my Android phone.  Hopefully someone more authoritative than me will weigh in.

  • If you own a PC you can copy the profiles, courses, and so on from the garmin to your PC.

    example:    /garmin/sports/

includes all profiles (there are all my datafields saved)

I am doing regular backups so I can do restores if needed

    I copy these folders:

    activites

    courses

    sports

    totals

    training

for your second question. I have no solution to prevent the downloads of new firmwares.

  • There was meanwhile a very comprehensive answer over at the Fenix 7 forum discussion that I linked in my original post.
