The Edge 1040 now communicates with a computer via MTP. macOS has limited support for MTP so the Edge 1040 will not show up as a volume in Finder. To access files on the device you need a 3rd party utility, for example OpenMTP.
Note that in macOS an application needs exclusive access to an MTP device. This means that you need to fully quit Express and make sure it is not running in the background, so disable that in the preferences of Express. Same applies when running Express again, other programs accessing the Edge via MTP need to be fully quit as well.
