Update Edge 1040

My edge 1040 is on 24.56.  At first when I selected check for updates i got a Wifi Error.

After a while i decided to hook up to pc and try garmin express.  No updates found other than map updates, but after I disconnected it said it was ready to update to 26.18 so I said yes.  It said it was successful, but still shows on 24.56.  I check for updates and none found,

any ideas?

Also, how do you back these up?  I see in Garmin Express a way to restore backup but no way to backup.

    I deleted the "_updates" directory in the /Garmin folder (moved to my desktop).  Disconnected from PC.  On 1049 checked for updates via Wifi.  It took a while but found 26.18.  Now in About it shows I am on 26.18.

    Now when I go to check for updates, it notes transfer already in progress,

    Still not sure how to back this up.
