No synch of ride to phone

My Garmin 1040 (solar) has suddenly stopped synching rides to my iPhone (14)

On Tuesday, it worked fine (that was after the latest Garmin software update). Today, my ride will not transfer no matter what I do.

- I have hard restarted both phone and Garmin

- I have reinstalled the Garmin Connect app on phone

- I have re-paired the two a number of times

- I have tried "Wi-fi Synch", which always waits a while then says "Synch failed"

Every time I hit the synch icon (little arrows in circle), they spin for a bit, the progress indicator progresses, and it givers me a happy little green check mark, full of pride for having synched... except the new ride is not there.

Nothing I do will get this ride to show up in Garmin Connect, even though it's right there on the home screen on the 1040, and shows up normally in the Activities list on the Garmin. It is not their in the Activities list on Garmin Connect, Tuesday's ride is.

Gosh, I was so happy that my device screen in Garmin Connect was finally not in Chinese any more, then this happens. Garmin People, we know this is complicated, but why can't you make the core functions actually work reliably, instead of constantly loading more superfluous junk functions on to the 1040???

  • If you have a Windows or Mac computer, try a manual upload from your Garmin device to Garmin Connect Web - How Do I Manually Upload an Activity I Recorded to Garmin Connect?

If you get an error when attempting the upload, then this is probably a corrupt file. Suggest trying either FIT File Tools using the section remover, or FIT File Viewer

If you still are unable to upload the activity .fit file, then attach it to this thread. We can take a look to see if it is repairable.

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
    • Or upload the fit file to a reputable file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.
  • Thanks. A manual upload via cable to my laptop did work. There was an error for "invalid file", but the data still transferred, I'm wondering whether I hit the "end-ride" button when I got home but then never clicked though all 17 screens that Garmin requires to actually finish a ride, and thus had a (mildly) un-standard file to save that stymied Garmin Connect. If so... why make saving so complicated?

  • You can disable the questions when saving a ride. Long press the profile and then the options to disable are in the Nutrition/Hydration and Self Evaluation menu.

  • Yeah.  IDK.  A month or two ago my activities wouldn't upload automatically.  I tried forcing a sync via Connect on my phone and it took a couple of tries to work.  After a couple of weeks of this, it started working automatically again. These were all finishing at home with strong cell and wifi. There were no updates to the Edge or Connect that I was aware of.
