'No memory available' message followed by crash

Today during a 3 hour ride my Garmin 1040 (non-solar) suddenly reported "No memory available" on the bottom of the screen. The message disappeared and the 1040 continued to work ok after that

About 15 minutes later the device crashed and rebooted. After the reboot it started a new activity and the first 2 hours of my ride are lost. I connected the device to my computer and looked in the 'Activities' folder but it has only the activity that was recorded after the reboot.

Not sure if it is related but when I started the 1040 there was a message that a new firmware for my Garmin Varia was available. I clicked the 'Remind me later' button and started my ride.

The following sensors were connected:

  •  Polar H10 heart rate monitor
  • Garmin Varia RTL515
  • Bontrager front light
  • Shimano DI2

The 1040 is on firmware 26.17 and has only the default Garmin cycle maps for Europe enabled.

Any tips how to save on memory use? Although the flagship Edge should not run out of memory in normal usage :-(
