BUG: WiFi sync is broken!

A WiFi sync does not transfer all data to Connect, so Unified Training Status does not work as intended!

If I leave my 965 (my primary device, on v22.22) at home while riding with my 1040 v26.17 and sync it with WiFi after, pulse does not transfer to Connect, and no intensity minutes are accounted for. The activity itself is transferred without issues though.

If I disable WiFi and sync with Connect Mobile (iOS) there are no issues. See my two test test rides today, the first one I had WiFi disabled and synced with the app and pulse transferred, the second one synced with WiFi and no pulse transferred:

If I trigger a manual WiFi sync it starts as normal with "transfer in progress" but after a while there's "sync failed".

After I installed 26.17 I performed a full reset of the 1040 but issue persists.

  • I found it's best to sync and power off the watch before I record a ride with the Edge and power the watch on again only after the Edge has succesfully uploaded the ride. This way the watch doesn't have a chance to overwrite the heart rate, intensity minutes and the recovery time from the Edge with null values.

  • I've disabled WiFi completely tbh. My syncs are soo bad when Wifi is enabled, that it's not even funny. I've once waited more than 30min before my activity finally was synced. And yes, I also have a separate 2.4Gig wifi. Funny thing is, my Wahoo Kickr v6 is connected exclusively to wifi (also the 2.4Gig) and works flawlessly, even racemode on zwift. But my 1040 can't even sync a 90min activity in 10s after saving it over wifi...
With wifi disabled, the sync is almost instant. I have no idea why it is so bad, but I just stopped using it. I just activate it shortly when I see there's a new FW, and disable it again after the FW has installed. So much less hassle...

  • All heart rate data displayed on the Connect timeline came from your Forerunner 965: All Day Heart Rate Graph and Recorded Activity Does Not Match
"All day" heart rate data is a wearable/watch feature only, as you would not be expected to have your Edge powered on all day.

, this just can't be true? Today I also left my watch at home and in airplane mode, and after syncing the Edge with app/bluetooth I can see the pulse and got intensity minutes. When the below screenshot was taken the watch was still in airplane mode. Will do another ride later today and then sync with wifi...

  • ...And now the second ride, longer and and with a bit more effort, but this time synced with wifi so no pulse transferred, and therefore no activity minutes accounted for. The watch was on the desk and in airplane mode, and my phone powered off so I'm 101% sure that wifi syncs are causing this...

  • What you are showing us here are gaps in your "all day" heart rate timeline while the watch is off and only the Edge is recording, as expected. Check out our FAQ: All Day Heart Rate Graph and Recorded Activity Does Not Match

It appears the two activities today were a high enough relative intensity to generate Intensity Minutes credit as displayed in your second screenshot. In general, if you record shorter rides of less than 20 minutes these may not generate Intensity Minutes.

I believe the differences in Intensity Minutes credit you are seeing are due to the intensity of the activities, and are not related to how the data is being sent to Garmin Connect.

  • The first gap in the graph is when I hit the shower, the pulse in red color is from the ride... Only the first short and easy activity generated minutes, when synced with app.

Second longer and harder ride synced with wifi got no pulse, and as you can see did not generate minutes, as you can see in the last picture

  •  thank you for the added details. I was mistaken, some of your activities are being uploaded via Wi-Fi.

However, the method by which your activities, intensity minutes, and heart rate data is sent to Connect should not determine how it is displayed or otherwise change it.

Heart Rate data recorded by the Edge is not intended to be reported to the Daily Summary and I have escalated this for further review. We are also investigating reports of multiple activities (more than one each day) not correctly reporting Intensity Minutes data. I believe the multiple daily rides is what is causing the intensity minutes discrepancy, and not related to Wi-Fi.

I greatly appreciate your continued feedback here and apologize I do not have a specific workaround at this time. I will update here with more details when available.

  • Well, I still blame wifi :-)

This is the first activity uploaded today, uploaded with wifi, and no pulse no activity minutes...

Maybe I do another one this evening uploading with bluetooth...

But what's the reason Edge pulse should not show/count if watch is left at home? I would take it as far as that Edge pulse should even overrule watch if it's worn but outside activity, as we all know the optic sensor on the watch is quite poor for higher heart rates if an activity is not started on it...

  • ...second little ride of the day, synced with bluetooth and pulse and intensity minutes accounted for:

So for me it's not a case about number of activities, but sync method used...

So I guess I'll just permanently disable wifi on the Edge, and hope that you are wrong about pulse not supposed to transfer to the daily numbers...

  • Hmm,   , maybe this is fixed now in beta v27.07...?

This is synced with wifi, and now everything seems to be correct:
