Indoor smart meter power setting

The daily suggested workout sets the indoor smart trainer power to 111 for a base ride which makes the pedals near impossible to turn for me. How do I reset the trainer power to be a default of 0 for DSW?

The free ride works fine for the power setting. The resistance and grade are set at 0%.

  • If it's base then it should be zone 2, and if it's impossible to turn the pedals in what's set up as zone 2 then it sounds as though the zones are set incorrectly. That said, it may be that you're just finding it hard to get the pedals turning initially, perhaps? If that's the case, then maybe ride for one minute before starting the workout on the device.

I'm not sure that you can edit a daily suggested workout. I don't use them, but rather use training plans (in which I have much more faith that I'm getting consistently planned training). However, I have just checked my device, and it's suggesting 90 minutes base, with a custom power range of 125-180w, which it looks from the notes as though it would fix at 155w. In itself, that's weird, because zone 2 for me is 154-211w as configured on the device, but, heh. However, the point is that it's fixing it at very little above zone 1, so really I'd say that you need to check the settings. As a starting point, do you know your FTP, or your FTP setting on the Edge? (I'd hazard a guess that it's set to 200w. Could you ride for an hour at 200w? If you're finding it hard to pedal at 111w, I'd guess probably not.)

  • Thanks for the quick response and helpful comments.

I'll try adjusting the power zones and see what happens. I think that the FTP is not (yet) accurately set up, but I'm trying to get this to auto-adjust by using Power and HR for each ride. As a interim measure, I had reduced the FTP to 87W as a measure to reduce the default training power applied initially during the daily suggested workout. So with more rides the FTP should automatically adjust itself. But the workaround is probably to not use the daily suggested workout until the FTP has been auto-adjusted, and then try again.

  • It will be interesting to see what happens. Just be aware that with the FTP probably set low, your other metrics will be bonkers - it is likely to be suggesting that you're overtraining massively by riding at above your FTP all the time!

It's worth establishing at least a rough mark for your FTP. I find that the 1040 does make a pretty good stab at it, but it will probably get there faster if you feed it some rides at optimal intensity. If you can manage it, try riding a 20-minute effort (after a good warm up) as hard as you can. It's not a "proper" FTP test, but it will give the device a good chance at getting it right. If you want to do an actual FTP test, Google it. Personally, I'd do it WITHOUT using a workout file, using trainer resistance or the gears to control resistance - if you construct a workout (Garmin removed theirs recently), DON'T set the 20-minute block to a target power, because that's what you'll then pretty much HAVE to ride to! The whole point is to find out what you can manage for 20 minutes.

If you do that, and measure the 20 minutes by starting and finishing a lap, you can manually estimate your FTP by multiplying your average power for that lap by 0.95, but I think the Garmin will actually do the job for you.
