Larger Map User Icon / Cursor has Arrived (27.09B) !

SEE 10/April 2025 update https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/403065/larger-map-user-icon-cursor-has-arrived-27-09b/1922305#1922305

I am sorry and very embarrassed that I am still harping on about a larger user location cursor / symbol on the map for 1040, 840 & 540 just like the one on the 1050. More than half the members of my club (and it's a big international one) say that the #1 enhancement they would like is a larger symbol especially as many of them (like me) have been riding for a good while and have declining eyesight (for fine detail) especially at night, in rain, after a few days in the saddle. Getting a 1050 is NOT the solution as we try (sometimes succeed) to do mostly stupid distances over multiple days (up to 90-210 hours) and battery life is also a priority.

I have mostly kept my obsession to the beta forums where I have raised it in each version for the last year to so and especially since the 1050 got the larger symbol. The request in each of these beta versions has scored the highest "up-vote" count for that version indicating a significant level of support, In the 24.xx beta this request got 110 up-votes, a record number (by 5 times) for any request on any device in the last few years. I had been advised that this stood a good chance of being done but as we get down to the tail end of the 26.xx beta it still has not been done.

Given it is already on the 1050 the cost / effort for Garmin is as close to zero as a change can be. Even just swapping the sizes of the current cursor & the Virtual Partner (currently twice as big) would be adequate and make two large groups happy (endurance riders & VP dislikers)?

So I am having another go, if you want to up-vote it that might prompt Garmin to do it? Go here and up-vote (up-arrow)

Thanks

  • I think that a larger cursor is a good suggestion but its size has not bothered me much.  I have always had orientation set as track up and the cursor is always in the same location on the map screen. Are you using North up and does this cause the cursor to not remain in the same location?

  • Replying here for visibility - having this accessability feature which is already on another device would be great.

It's always good to have more of these options, especially in cases of harder workouts or driving off the tarmac where you gotta watch the road ahead of you and not fiddle with the screen to easily see where you currently are.

But hey, I guess it's the same departament that keeps the dreaded virtual partner feature always on, while most folks just look for an option to disable that feature of questionable need.

  • and the cursor is always in the same location

    Every bit helps.

It's a bit after 3am, raining and a bit too cold, you have passed 1,000km of a 1220 ride, have been riding for 73 hours, time limit gives a maximum of another 17 hours, you keep trying to calculate the time in hand but keep coming up with a negative result, that's not good you think, have had 9 hours sleep in the last 3 days, some not great, last on a hard, cold floor at the control entrance way, bad choice but only space available due to the rain and the control was full, seemed like 1000s of people walking past?, should have got more sleep but couldn't and when you know you are behind the time limit you have to keep moving, if you can get ahead of the time limit will catch another hour at the next control in 75kms.

You try to read the Garmin map screen to confirm your position, there is a turn somewhere up ahead, but having trouble locating the Garmin on the handlebar let alone a 2x2mm triangle. Can't stare at it too long as some of the riders nearby are wobbling across the road, hang on, you are also wobbling across the road.

Tiny bit of color in the east, rain might be clearing, but it will be an hour before you could call it "light" and 2 before dawn and a bit of warmth, if you can stay upright & moving till then everything will be ok.

It's a mind game, positives can give you a boost, negatives weigh and grow, every plus helps including a bigger cursor if it was available.

  • I don't ride in those conditions but I can understand how any little thing can help on those type of rides. I previously used a Edge 705 and the screen was too small for navigation. I guess the ultimate solution is a 6" screen.

  • Yep.  I used a 705 for many years until I lost it on an mtb ride.  The screen size and resolution was just OK for following a course, but too small to figure out where I was or how to get to where I wanted to go by looking at the map, especially with the very slow panning and zooming. Like subsequent Edge units, it had persistent significant bugs after the final update and after support ended.  Edge product managers and engineers are pretty pigheaded about their design choices.

  • You have my full support with this

and the cursor is always in the same location

If this is an argument, by induction, we can suppose a cursor half the size of the previous one would also be in the same position and could locate it. And another one half the size of the previous one the same...So, just a pixel es suficiente.

If they have made it bigger in the 1050 is because it is an improvement over the 1040, they are not supposed to make things worse in a new model. And given the ridiculous difficulty and economic/temporal cost of adding 3 or 4 lines of code to make it bigger, one wonders if there is some obscure reason why, after so many complaints and requests, this one has still not been taken into account.

Moreover, if Garmin thinks that someone is going to bother to enlarge the cursor, it is not very difficult to add an option to choose the size/color/shape of the cursor, as in the car GPS.

  • any input on this? Seems like a simple thing to do (but better to make it user configurable)

  •

Classic MapTheme                        Previous Size (26.18)                          Custom MapTheme

               Mountain MapTheme                              High Contrast

And we get to keep the MapTheme too, win-win-win

In 27.09 BETA so "be careful" might be buggy?

  • Awesome.  Now they need to lose the VP.

  • Good news ..Thanks @L.Rouge

Waiting for the update now to check it
